24.1 for me over the last 3 years. Mix of country roads and motorway.

Although in terms of economy 25mpg isn't anything to write home about I do wonder what other cars would be capable of delivering as much performance vs economy as the 46 M3. It is quote impressive when looking at other options.

around 22mpg round town and 31mpg on a run (brim-to-brim figures, OBC is about 5% optimistic), with a range of 370 miles on SU. The mpg and torque improved markedly after a VANOS renewal of seals etc.

Haha! I’d love to but it never sounds the same on a video with the sort of recording kit I have (iPhone)!! Real life is way better.
I’ll give it a try though.

To add to the story - my fuel pump has just failed... I'm wondering if it has been on its way out for some time, possibly helping to achieve a lean cruise and good economy!?!? I'll post up my average when new pump is in.

Get easily 30 on runs. About 22 where I live in the city.

Can't spank it anymore on the M1 around here with all the cameras hence the economy, but the a/b roads are more fun anyway.

I too think it is very good for the performance given.

My previous experience of a twin turbo legacy and an E39 540 estate, both averaged about 20-25 ish mpg, despite a little less power (~280bhp).

My recent 197bhp Octavia VRS would do 35mpg easily enough where the M3 might have done 30, and it felt quick when needed with the torque. A friends mk7 GTi (230ps performance pack model), was doing over 40 mpg over the course of a long trip where we went over the Cairngorms road. That seems even more impressive, although it is a far less exciting engine.

I've got a Clio 197 just now that isn't making 30 mpg even on a steady run! I'm hoping the new thermostat it needs will improve this once it gets fitted on Friday and get it a little closer to the book figures. I like the car, but M3 economy with 2/3 the engine and power isn't making sense!

I am a real mpg geek and love eking out as much as possible when I'm not enjoying the power. I don't know if I would manage with an E90 V8 given the figures I see mentioned, not a concern yet anyway.

The performance of my M3 is comparable to that of my 993 but that is a lot lighter and has about 80bhp less so perhaps it is no surprise that it manages about 21/23mpg trundling about compared to 17/18mpg.

I reset my average mpg when I bought mine 3.5 yrs ago, after 52k miles it's showing 24.3mpg - I'm happy with that considering I was getting near on exactly the same with my old E90 330i

Oh really!? I thought that direct injected NA engine was a bit of a peach for power and economy, the book figures are huge for it, I think 50mpg is there for the extra urban cycle. Madly unachievable sure, but if it could do 40 but have ~260bhp that seems good...

Yeah, weird one huh! I put it down to the mind set behind it, with the M I don't feel the need to drive as fast or show how quick it is, everyone knows (that needs to know) what the M is all about, with the 330i it must have been the opposite :muttley:

What’s the tank size on the E46 M3? Just trying to get a rough idea on range as well as economy.

Cheers. What sort of range are folks getting from a tank? Both round town and on a run.

Fair play. I’ve always tracked my MPG. From 1.6 litre hacks to 5 litre V8 super saloons. Maybe I’m just a nerd!
