And in today’s news….which should resonate with many here, given the state of our road network.

The 8th Viscount Gage, a Tory peer, received £300,000 in public money to mend potholes on a driveway in his private estate. There's more, this taxpayers money came from the Levelling Up Fund.

So just to be clear…
It‘s his driveway, on his land.
He’s absolutely minted.
But taxpayers are paying for it to be fixed.

Can’t wait to hear how anyone can defend this.

‘The new road provides safer, easier, and greener ways for visitors to reach Charleston and will help support the recovery and growth of the region’s creative and visitor economy.’

The South East Local Enterprise Partnership, through which the grant application was made, said the fund has created 11 new jobs and ‘helped to boost the local creative and cultural sector’.


So for Shi7s and giggles I'll have a tilt at the case for the defence.

It doesn't appear to actually be his drive, it's part of a property that is held in trust that is a registered charity.

The poor people who drive up the newly repaired drive won't risk damage to their aged Dacia Sanderos now as they come and see how the other half live, they won't need a Rangie now so that's good for the environment.

Define minted? by some standards yes, by others no. His personal wealth at an estimated £15mill is peanuts compared to some 170 ish UK billionaires.

The public good is the 11 new jobs.

So what looks like a slam dunk hang him high and flog him to DM readers might just be a mild harruumph, some anti old money indignation and a suspended sentence of mild drive envy.

At least it's not £billions going to be spent on a giant train set.

Some know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

Ok it's indefensible but fighting lost causes can lighten the mood in these darkish days.

This government has been pretty horrendous, and BoJo will surely go down as one of the most incompetent PMs of all time, but playing devil’s advocate - any government would have come under fire, made numerous ****-ups and pi55ed off the nation in this situation, they were always going to look bad no matter who they were.

Who knows, this potentially could have all been far worse with a Labour government in power, imagine if Corbyn had won the 2019 General Election with his cabinet of mongoloids, we may well have been in an even worse state.

As a centralist I want a Labour government to come in next and continue with the same level of ineptitude and up-fu<kery so at least everyone on the political spectrum can see this is an un-winnable situation for any government.

Plus Labour governments are always good for a laugh, they make people happy for a good few years because they’re not Tories, but always put the country into crippling dept, and then everyone capitulates and realises socialism needs to take a break for a while because money doesn’t grow on trees, and Tories, although appear vile to many, can at least add up - it’s a brilliant cycle we have here.

Interesting points, and I dare say there may be facts and background that are put at a distance where us plebs are concerned. Just look at the model of disconnection and denial exercised by Johnson regarding his flat refurb...where he was found bang to rights.

This business of a property that is not only held in trust but is also a registered charity is interesting. Some may even suggest that's a creative way of avoiding self funding. I'd ask the question though, if someone was that wealthy, regardless of any shared use/charidee status etc, does it never cross the mind of these people that they can actually afford to get their hand in their own pocket, thus freeing funds for true "levelling up" that many more public would benefit from?

As for "minted", the daily flail article you reference seems to cast some doubt on his "miserly" 15 mill wealth, given the number of houses he allegedly owns, along with the proceedings of his painting sale. If true that lot racks up almost 50 mill on the back of a fag packet. So something doesn't seem quite right there! And where lack of clarity is concerned, there's usually a reason. Transparency often seems in short supply these days.

Returning to the "levelling up" aspect, and I will quote from the article you've referenced, how does his driveway repair fit in with "specifically aimed at helping Covid-hit infrastructure"?

Come to think of it, why do we even need "levelling up" as a new initiative? Surely there are existing processes to identify areas that need improvement? Don't local authorities play a part in that already? I may be posing a naive question there, but it strikes me that building a new, centralised mechanism, to improve things at a local level merely allows for a convoluted web of deceipt to be designed around it...

Bear in mind I am considering that thought based on the PPE scandal for one. Find the need, ignore existing processes and suppliers, then pay top whack...and more, to connected mates. Feels somewhat similar.

The old saying about no smoke without fire could have been used so often, and increasingly so, during his leadership. That in itself must say something to even the most staunch supporter. Hell, even opinion polls in deepest blue territory are wobbling.

The lack of interest by the Met, in not investigating what are laughingly, crimes committed on their patch...no, under their very nose, is disgusting. Oh you don't look into retrospective crimes?

Having seen and listened to the MP (Minister ?) on the morning programme being interviewed, I'm just a little pissed off the direct question was never asked, namely "In the light of these and previous revelations, how can you defend BJ actions ?"
It's all very well replying wait for Ms Gray's investigation report etc etc", but each time another allegation is revealed it will add time to her report or is this just a delaying tactic in the hope that by the time the report is actually published, the hope is the population will have forgotten all the furore ?
