    Hi all,

Just a bit of a heads up really. I've got the Test pipes fitted to my E92. Went for an MOT at a BMW dealer & failed the visual inspection of the exhaust system (didn't even do the emissions test).

I half expected it to fail & had spoken to an Exhaust Fabricator & they think they'll be able to knock something up so I can bolt the Cats back in & remove as & when required.

I hoped I'd get away with it this time as I'd not heard of any other failures, but there would always be next time so I'm hoping a swappable solution will be do-able.

    Cheers,
    Ben

The most logical solution is to have gutted cats then they look factory from visual inspection and usually still pass the emmisions test
    Otherwise,
Perhaps if you took it to a non Bmw dealer they wouldn’t spot the fact that the cats aren’t there
Had mine tested earlier this year and my test pipes weren’t mentioned

Your first and biggest mistake was getting an MOT at a BMW dealer.

I thought about that but was worried if it happened to fail the emissions I'd be properly screwed then!

Yeah, fair point but I don't really know any 'friendly' MOT testers so thought I'd take my chances. Plus it's AUC so I get free MOT's....that will teach me for being tight!

I managed to find a good second hand x pipe a little while back that I can fit just in case I need to, wasn’t easy to find though
It concerned me that they will be impossible to get hold of before long as so many are cut up and modified

That was my original plan after getting the test pipes but I'd not been able to find an x pipe (probably due to the reason you mention). I might have another look on the Net though.

I'm planning on taking the car to the exhaust fabricator next week so I'll update the thread with the outcome of that.

Ye take it elsewhere and save yourself the hassle mate. It will still pass on emissions. If you’re based anywhere near chester I’ll test it for ya.

Cheers for the offer but I'm in Worcester so a bit of a trek for me. The exhaust place is local so I'll see what they say when they've seen it, if they have my pants down over it I'll look at other options!

If it helps, for reference, mine just recently passed emissions test with gutted cats from modstock.

Thanks for the info on the test pipes, I've always seen it as a risk to fail the visual inspection but I've also read before people not having issues with it.

It does help, I'm toying with the idea of taking it for a test at Kwikfit as they have slots this afternoon & hoping they're not quite so familiar with the exhaust system.

Just make sure to warm up the car properly before the test (aka send it on the way there)

Tbf, I passed with secondary cat deletes (straight pipe in place) and nothing was said.

Don’t particularly trust kwikfit ! I personally would recommend taking to a reputable independent garage. Poss even mention the test pipes and see how they are about it. Most likely they’d say if it gets through the emissions they won’t fail it.

Update, I have taken it for another test & it has passed.

They basically said to advise future testers that it's had 'Sports Cats' fitted & this should cover the changes to the exhaust system as it passed the emissions fine.

Relieved! Thanks for the replies. As mentioned earlier, I think the biggest mistake was it going to a Dealer.

Only problems I've got now to deal with is a slight diff leak (propshaft) & a nail in the tyre, both of which I hadn't noticed.

    Cheers,
    Ben

Glad you’ve taken it somewhere that passed it now.

If you ever have any problems a quick solution is to put a cover over the area as nothing can be removed by a tester so they can’t see that there are no cats or anything else that they may fail it on. Much quicker than swapping exhausts for a test.

I got mine tested and passed at Kwik fit just checked the Google reviews to ensure they don't have a habit of failing for insconpicious issues...had similar issues at Halfords previously.

I have an evolve x-pipe so they wouldn't be able to tell that it isn't stock but the secondary cats weren't warm enough so the tester had to hold the revs at 3-4k for a few mins until they were warm enough to pass.
