Any good method of getting tailpipes clean? Inside and on tips it’s quite black now, I was thinking maybe fine steel wool / brasso + metal polish and lots of elbow grease? Is there a safe degreaser that can be used to lift the carbon deposit before moving onto polish ?

    Maybe carb cleaner and autosol
    Carb cleaner probably melts paint

I'd go with a jet wash and all purpiose cleaner to try remove as much dirt as possible. Then use some 00 wire wool too bring back the true coating. Once your happy you've removed enough carbon build up again go with a jetwash and all purpose cleaner and proceed with autosol or your chosen metal polish and elbow grease.

well carefully sprayed on some oven cleaner, with a bit of elbow grease its better but still not quite there yet. Next time will try leaving the oven cleaner on for a little longer (upto 30 mins as says on the can)

Alloy cleaner to get most of the dirt off then some fine wire wool with the Britemax twin polish, after that seal it with some alloy wheel sealant.
