    Hi
A have a spare key that I purchased unprogrammed because i only had one key when I purchased the car,is it possible to program the key to the car myself using inpa or will I need to take it to a dealer,I’ve done the usual internet searches and have found conflicting information and horror stories of people immobilising thier cars
    Thanks chris

I don't think a dealer will do it for you ...keys come pre-coded to one of the slots in your EWS module in the car. The only bit a dealer will do for you is setup the central locking (which you can do yourself with a few button clicks)

Unfortunately your spare key is pretty much useless. Ben @ BM Keys will cut and code a new key for you for around £50 - he might be able to programme your spare key for you, but if it were me doing it I wouldn't waste my time with something that may or may not work; he has the keys, and the virgin transponders and the tools to do one from scratch

If you need a key ASAP get a wallet key from dealer as IIRC cheapest

Then just buy another key from dealer or BM Keys
Be aware once someone else makes one dealers record of used slots will be out

Do bm keys need an old key or the car or can I just order a key the same way I would from a dealer, I believe there in London so would be over a 200 mile round trip for me

If you can park the car up for a couple of days, you just need to unscrew the white EWS module from the driver's footwell and provide a key to cut the lock pattern.

I don't know that Ben uses the equipment posted above, but that's certainly how I've seen it done on YouTube.

BMW obviously know what the codes are/should be from the factory. As E46CoupeM3 points out though, there's a risk (albeit small) with any used car that the slot BMW think they are providing a key for may have been overwritten already with an aftermarket key
