I've just renewed mine but should have read the details more clearly about the monthly direct debit (which you can cancel at any time) option. It looks very appealing. SORN the car over winter, saving a few months tax.

You do realise you can SORN the car whenever you want and DVLA will reimburse you remaining full months if you have paid for the year?

Pay it into your bank if you have one that’s within 50 miles of you because they have shut most of them!!!
Also if you can find one that’s open as mine is open 10-2 4 days a week! Useless if you actually work

Yep no banks in my town at all. I swear DVLA are the only people under 70 that seem to think a cheque is a valid method of payment these days.

Did I pay my tax with a ****ing cheque? No, debit card!! Do I get an instant online refund? Of course not. ****ing retards.

But yeah. Cheques. WTF! You pay with card or direct debit but then refunds are issued by the department still in 1987.

So no one thinks EV cars wont be taxed heavily in the future.Dream on.As far as road tax goes , you know how much your car will cost per year before you buy it , if you dont want to use it and keep it as a garage queen then tough.

Just had my renewal through at £480 for a i3s with Range extender. As it’s list price is over £40k and it’s not fully electric (even though I drive every where on electric and the Rex is for emergencies) I still have to pay.

As it’s my city and commute car, can’t go fully electric as the range is just outside my comfort zone.

As I said earlier, that £40k limit has never increased over time. So in real terms it has gone down. A lot of people were buying cars from 2016 to avoid it (now, obviously, those cars are a bit older). I hate this tax, because a sh1tbox can pollute worse than a luxury car, and if the car costs more, I inherently pay more tax on it anyway.

It is why I am buying a GR Yaris for £34k... take that HMRC/DVLA :refuck:

No such thing as road tax anymore gents. Vehicle exise duty is based on each individual car (roads are maintained throughout Council tax I think).

This gives them the power to change the criteria of which vehicles should be in which tax band whenever they want unfortunately.

Currently they are trying to get people into certain cars so low or no VED is an incentive but one days those cars will also have to have VED paid on them I bet

Only saving grace for me is that I don't drive my M3 all year round so I can do a monthly DD for when it's on road.

That 2017 change point is interesting. I was looking at M140i. You get weird thing of pre April (I think) 2017 they are £275. After that they are £150 if under £40k and probably £475? if optioned up to over £40k.

So 3 cars registered within weeks of each other could be very different prices to Tax. It would be enough of a factor in my decision all else being equal.

I think Mustang was the one that made the magazines as was just under £40k for V8 in 2017 so ended up being £150 for V8. Must be crap owning late 2016/early 2017 one if they are now £600 a year.

I suppose those with a 2017 M3/M4 are away to drop into £150 band next year?

Complaining about 500 quid tax... If only be skipping my way to the tax office if it was that price over here lol.

My E46 of 511 euro for just 3 months! 1809 per year.
    A post '08 E92 M3 is 2350 euro per year!!!

Our GTI is 700 per year then.

My Defender, Discovery, X5 are "cheap tax" then at 330 per year due to being commercials or crewcabs.

Only saving grace is cars over 30 are 58 a year.
