Today it was time to get rid of the little spider stuck in my instrument cluster.

So I took it out and used the opportunity to cover up the now defunct smg lights.

Avin head unit fitted whilst I was at sextons and have to say - apart from not getting the bmw obd reader to work yet - I’m really pleased with it (now fixed!)

I basically wanted wireless apple car play in a unit that looks stock and it does that job beautifully - sounds great with the HK amp - still uses stock steering wheel controls - displays car specific info and even has a web browser and Plex playback.

I am absolutely thrilled with the results.

DAB aerial - DAB receiver was an option I wanted, just in case I have no internet reception for carplay.

Some screen shots:

Thought I'd show you the completed lovett repainted matching steering wheel trims - my OCD was never happy with the two halves being different colours/finishes:

My OCD is also very unhappy about the brown door cards and red seats, but they as well as the very scratched centre console below the handbrake, are only temporary.

Going to be interesting keeping fingerprints to a minimum.

Calipers going in to FAW Customs tomorrow for painting Porsche speed yellow. New Alcon decals purchased and will be lacquered over at the same time. Fyi, it turns out that the calipers below are actually painted Mountune Yellow, which I'm less keen on in all the normal lights I have viewed it in.

Imola interior sold (not sure that was wise but hey ho).

Now chasing a booking with Shaun Gosling to have the rear brace fitted. I contemplated getting the vincebar done, but it would only be as well, not instead and with that in mind, I'm not sure it would be worth it.

The Gosling brace tightens up the feel of the back end and I think that's only going to come from tying the rear shock towers together. I can't see the vincebar doing anything other than stiffening the boot floor and the RACP carrier points.

Will of course take multiple pictures of the brace going in tomorrow, but in the meantime, I wanted to update the HVAC panel to the later one. I always found it counter intuitive for the temperature and fan speed to be adjusted with horizontal rather than vertical buttons!

You might also make out in photo the ibus app which took me bloody ages to get working due to some strange gremlin in the wiring that I still don't understand but at least it's working.

Now just need to figure out how to stop the screen from being so reflective.

Also forgot to say that since the wireless car play works so well, I really wanted a great place to put the iphone that would also charge it whilst using waze.

It kind of defeats the object of having wireless carplay if you have to plug it in to a charger anyway.

Best option was one of these from induktiv in the states.

As I mentioned above, trip to Gosling Racing today for the rear brace to be fitted, the last piece of the four RACP support points that needed bracing.

Starting with the first pic you can see the Redish brace welded in beautifully by BMR and then waxoiled.

The pictures below are roughly in chronological order.

As ever, it's a real pleasure to chat to Shaun, who was happy to chat while he worked.

Just like last time, despite the plating and the gusset cups already being installed, nothing has any effect on the feel of the car compared with the brace. I'm sure the vincebar does the job regarding the RACP support, but I really like the extra lateral rigidity that the brace provides. It makes the car feel totally different. So much more solid and together. You don't know that you are feeling any flex in the rear until it has gone.

The brace also takes away some of the shunting you can feel through the drivetrain when you change gear, even when making very gentle progress. It enables the car to be driven more smoothly as it removes any feeling of slack/backlash from the rear diff.

It remains the best value mod I've done and one I had to do again on this car.

Shaun maintains it's an easy job to fit and anyone with mechanical understanding can do it without instructions. It's a four hour install, and frankly I'm pleased I insisted on him doing it as his knowledge of the product not only speeds it up but makes things like templating the cut outs in the boot liner, that much easier.

Couldn’t bear the red with the brown any longer and since the imola interior has been sold already and the car is going off to be nitron’d it made sense to get to work on removing the seats and refitting the brown ones and the new interior trim/cinnamon arm rest.

Brief update - will follow up with pictures tomorrow.

Back seat, centre arm rest, front seats and possibly new centre console going in tomorrow.

I also have what I believe to be a better reversing camera going in too. Am hoping the fit is slightly better.

First job was to refit the rear bench after changing the centre buckle for a new centre seat belt with shoulder strap type (still with two headrests - which I much prefer). After that reinstall the armrest - this time in cinnamon rather than black.

Then I took the opportunity to hoover out the carpets under the seats:

Note the new centre console:

Then whilst fitting new bits, new weather strips for the bottom of both doors as the ends of the old ones were corroding.

Also decided to fit a less conspicuous and better looking and performing rear view camera, the previous one was a clear plastic and didn't look great. I also replaced the windscreen wipers with the more modern and well reviewed type:

Excuse the bird sh1t, it's gone now but I wasn't rushing to remove it as the bonnet is scheduled to be resprayed in the spring anyway.

These are the pictures I've been waiting ages to take, with the seats sitting in the garage the whole time.

Time to put them where they belong:

Last but not least, since fitting the avin head unit I wanted a wireless charger since the wireless carplay has the potential to kill the battery so it made sense to make sure it doesn't die. Having to plug it in defeats the object or wireless carplay!

Got new door perimeter seals to go on and new door sill covers, but waiting until the illuminated door sills go on for that.

Additionally, it's going to Nitron tomorrow for the road suspension to be developed, so no point prettifying it for other people to use it - so the above can wait.

Brakes almost ready but they will go on long after the suspension goes on.

Am also holding back on my Karbonius install until at least the spring after which will be the front bumper, bonnet, front wings, and boot lid respray at Litchfields' fantastic paintshop.
