Last couple of months I’ve smelt a burning oil smell on occasion and yesterday sat in traffic I noticed a very small puff of smoke come from the right side of the car along with the oil smell.
It had the 4yr major service at sytner back in July last year and I’ve done just over 4K miles since so I’m not sure if it could be oil that was spilt back then or something more serious? Cars done 35k and there’s no sign of milking on the filler cap.
Looking at the engine it seems it’s turbo side but above the turbo, gasket area but also along the length. It is in an area below where it would likely go if you missed the oil filler cap and I don’t seem to be using any oil according to the on board oil measure. I’ve tried to picture it below but it’s hard to see. I can take it in as I have the extended warranty albeit I’ll have to pay the first £250.
Any ideas? Anyone seen anything similar or experienced the same?

Could be spilt oil, or maybe a slight weep from the rocker cover gasket.

Fingers crossed it’s just overspill, I’ll keep an eye on it over the next few weeks.

New rocker cover and gasket required, how that starts to leak at 35k I’ll never know

    Anyone ever had this?
Hopefully get it back next week.

Happened on my E93...twice in 3 years.

What’s happened to the rocker cover that warrants its replacement?

    The gasket leaking is understandable.

Have you noticed any smoke coming out the back of the exhaust?

No smoke from the exhaust that I’ve noticed, it’s strange they are replacing the cover too but I can only assume there’s a possibility that the cover is out of true or just bmw recommend changing both.
Still not something you’d expect is it at that kind of mileage.

We see lots of hairline cracks in rocker covers. Plastic shite on some cars.

renewing gasket is required every time it’s removed
