Have to say, I do like the looks of the new M cars but that model (especially for an M-lite and not a total base model) looks shït.

Agree it is a bit boring when BMW usually cherry picks journos to review the car then sits behind the camera whilst they film, what do they expect them to say? would be nice for someone to just come out and say you’ve ****ed up the front end mate.

F***ing horrible looking thing, if this is the that design won I'd hate to see the unsuccessful designs! Probably looked better than this sh1t, no hofmeister kink, it's just lost all bmws past, just an annomomous blob, I won't be buying any future bmws, that's it for me now!

It’s hideous. How the mighty have fallen, it looks like an upstart Chinese brand trying to plagiarise a BMW design. It’s not just the big front grill, it’s the whole car. It looks incoherent and dumpy, no part of the design flows. The worst part of the video is when they flick to a Giulia and then Mustang; the BMW looks particularly jarring after that comparison!

The big factor to me as well is size, it looks huge and at a minimum of 1800kg, way way too heavy. Just what were you thinking BMW, is this really what the Chinese market want?

Is it really true that BMW are suggesting they chose the bigger grill to aid cooling for ‘bigger engines’? What absolute BS are they trying to feed us!

Absolutely, and the grille goes over the internal bumper so no cooling effect there

The sad thing is I’m kinda getting used to the badger face and found myself not actually noticing it.

The all black grill looks ok(ish) compared to that on the new M3/4.

I’m guessing the 48v motor is to help fake better mpg?

World's gone mad, extra weight would it really increase mpg over say 100k miles of dragging the batteries around etc?

The Mrs has just got rid of a 3 year old merc that had stop start, all was ok for 2 years, but with her real world driving the 2nd stop start batt wasn't getting enough charge to work so she spent a year dragging extra weight around without it working, surely negating any mpg savings that it should have produced. Yeah I thought the same why didn't you say something i could have charged it up but then again that's extra carbon wasted to charge the battery etc.

Don't forget all of these stop and goo fuel saving things are only ever tested on a fixed rolling road and just to get past emission rules etc. Real world the savings are negligible if anything.

Agreed.. you will probably save about £100 worth of fuel during ownership if you're lucky.. which will be instantly offset by the starter motor you'll need to replace for about £3,000 because of the extra work it has to do, constantly starting the engine when it's only been off for 5 seconds. I wonder what rules the EU will come out with next? Insisting you have someone run in front of you carrying a lantern to warn pedestrians you're coming?

I'm glad the G8x cars are so ugly, as it's made it really easy for me to leave the BMW brand behind now, without any regrets at all.
