    Not a Rover! A Caterham 7 :D

Sacrilege perhaps but recently I've started to get a little bored with my F80 M3. Bored is unfair - familiar, I've had it for 2 and half years. It's astonishingly good, especially with CCBs and MPE and right now, for me, there's nothing out there for the money to replace it. Which is why I'm not going to

I've hankered after a 7 / Atom for years but they are usually described as not even a second but third car and I've always chickened out of the idea. My wife has a 5 door Cooper S and we also have a Discovery for family duties, so no excuses not to now...

This particular car was new and unregistered at Caterham's main outlet in Crawley and I was quite lucky to get almost the spec and even colour (Roulette Green) I would have chosen if building to order.

For those not familiar with the Caterham range, the 620S has a 2 litre Ford Duratec engine, supercharged and producing 310bhp @ 7700rpm and 219lbs ft @ 7350rpm. It weighs 610kg. The S has a 5 speed manual gearbox (The R has a 6 speed sequential and there are some who say the R is fine on the road but others reckon the R is best driven to and used on track only). Mine will be mainly a road car, although I think a trip to my nearest track, Knockhill, will be a must.

I flew down to Gatwick to collect the car and drove it back to Scotland - it really was epic journey! The running in service is at 1000 miles and half of those were covered getting the car home! It was such a great way to get to know a car I had never even test driven, let alone driven any of its type. A mixture of A roads and unfortunately motorways due to the sheer distance involved. But it felt great and I literally felt at one with the car. You really sit 'right in' a Caterham, especially with the lowered floors. The picture taken below was at my first fuel stop and gives you some idea of the driver's perspective - the guys in the Koenigsegg were en route to GFoS btw.

What's it like to drive? I'm still getting to know the car and it's still in its running in period but it feels sublime. So tactile. No power steering, no servo'd brakes (let alone ABS!), no traction control and more soberingly, no crumple zones, air bags or any other get-out-jail-free cards. What I have found out so far is that with hot tires on a dry road, a third gear overtake resulted in what was possibly the longest power slide I've never intended . But it was so controllable, even if naively unanticipated, and being able to actually see what way the front wheels are pointing, to me, is a big advantage. The steering itself is very direct although surprisingly not overly quick in terms of ratio, but with so little mass to deviate from a given course it just faithfully turns and grips.

I'm looking forward to getting to know my 7 more and more and I'll try to update this thread as I go.

A few more pics to finish with for now, Cheers:

These are wicked Fun, and a complete hoot, a drivers dream, trouble is, only a true petrolhead would understand, to the other 90% of the population you look like a Knob.

I don't think the latter part is true. Mine turns heads wherever I go, and you can't park it without people coming over and wanting to talk about it. Complete strangers ask to sit in it, which is a bit strange. I've even had people asking if their kids can sit in it.
The genuine disadvantage is Lorry wheel nuts are literally above your eyeline. They can be frightening on dual carriageways in heavy traffic.

I have had a few Caterhams and Westfields, I disagree with the fan club. Just my experience over the years.

Fair enough. Sounds like the complete opposite of my experience. Perhaps I have a friendlier face :D

Amazing machine. You've got stones buying a 620.

I wanted a Westfield maybe a seight or a duratec with circa 170hp or caterham if i could atretch before I got the m3 but not sure I've got the space for it. So got the m3. Still want a Westfield. Had a go in one once and there's just nothing like it.

Careful of 4x4 or whatever reversing into you because they didn't see you in it.....

I don't know if it's stones or stupidity - there's a fine line bravery and insanity! I've learned early on it bites...

I've had a taste for this already albeit under slightly different circumstances on the motorway, Roulette Green or otherwise, no-one sees you.

Thanks for the advice and genuinely, please keep the tips coming as I need all the pointers I can get. :)

Had a westy been out in a 620S on track and now have an MNR with a hayabusa engine in.

Those 620S on track redefine what is fast, if you arent used to driving around in an F1 car then the way they sail past others is on another level. Stupid quick.

    Superb buy there.
