I wonder just how the new M3/4 is going to sound with the new OPFs fitted ?. I wonder if BMW are making any effort at all, to give us some sort of enthusiastic sound, or just coming up with something that think they can get away with ?. I note the new F8 Ferrari, has a length of exhaust pipe, running around the rear bulkhead somewhere, in an attempt to bleed off some exhaust tone, so giving the driver some sort of sound satisfaction.
I know with the new WLTP rules for emissions etc, that they will be sound limited, but surely they should be at least trying to sort this more than they have ?. There must be a way of giving us the sound that all of us crave ?. We have cats, OPFs, resonators and silencers in a modern exhaust system. This is surely overkill, and just another way to kick the enthusiastic motorist in the goolies ?.
I know BMW wont give a toss really, and that they wont ever see this thread on Cutters, but if by some small miracle they do, here is my heart felt plee, COME ON BMW, SORT THIS OUT FOR US !

The new S58 engine sounds better than the S55 in my opinion.

But with twin-turbochargers and OPF filters these cars will never sound as good as their N/A predecessors.

Its not even about the turbocharged engine either, as i was pretty stoked with my M4 Comp with MPE, pre OPFs. The X3M in the video wont even have OPFs either, so the ones over here wont even sound as good as this ?.

Thing is they know people will buy the car regardless so they won’t bother. Look at the E92 -> F82. That was the time you’d have really expected them to make an effort given they were leaving the sound of the V8. They didn’t bother.

Porsche still nail it with their turbocharged flat 6s though!

Simon , you know I have been banging on about this since I got the merc, it’s simple and my survey proved that 2/3
Won’t shop around they buy the the Badge, so why would the accounts running BMW allow them to spend multi millions on sound R&D that would be crazy when 2/3 will buy regardless of sound or looks, win win for BMW.
But what goes around comes around and they are killing their image with the DFS style marketing and oversupply, this will come back and bite them on the bum IMHO.
My old e30 sounded miles better that most new engines I loved that motor

Even the new JCW sounds crap know and I really like the sound of ours, maybe I will get a Fiesta ST it sounds good so ford can do it as well.
I saw a new 7 series yesterday it look horrendous to me , but hey it’s a luxury barge and not bought on looks, but still it puts people off other models, as you know I’m really keen to get into an M but I want to enjoy the whole experience not just 0 to 100 times. I’m as well with an electric car if I want 0 to 100 and crap sound IMHO, dare I say it BMW are preparing us for electric :muttley:

You'll be able to make it sound like anything you want...... All you have to do is choose on the idrive what car you would like it to sound like and it will play the sound through the speakers :muttley:

I watched a video recently, although struggling to find it now, about all the research and development that went into the S55 exhaust system and it's sound (or specifically, ways to improve it).

They certainly did spend £££ trying to sort it, but the drivetrain design and layout is a major hindrance. Porsche may have a flat six turbo, but the fact its behind the driver and has short exhaust paths makes all the difference. Also BMW didn't want to be accused of 'fake' sounds (ironic since they were anyway) so they just amplified the intake tract sounds without changing them, through the audio system. They considered a similar system to many cars with a physical link to the cabin, but the video explained that those sounds followed the torque curve, rather than the power curve and didn't follow the 'high revving nature' of the S55 (ie a lot of grumbly sounds through the mid range, then it dropping off significantly). These 'sound-symposer' (Fords term) systems appear in quite a few hot hatches, and in my experience BMW are correct in their thoughts on it.

FYI incase you didn't realise that's a US car which doesn't have OPF. UK car won't sound like that sadly (without chopping off bits of the exhaust)
