Hello everyone,

I apologise for posting another thread regarding tyres.

I think there was a discussion about which Michelins are the best. I remember reading and I was a bit confused as I didn't really understand which ones people thought are the best for road use only. I won't take my car on track.

Which Michelin tyres are the best ones to go for?

PS4S are the newer ones but if PSS still available and are cheaper you can’t go wrong with those

I went OEM PSSs because I wanted the star rating; I don’t think PS4S come with it.

I also recall reading something about load rating of the side walls… not sure how much it would impact a daily driver.

PS4S have the advantage over PSS in cold / wet weather, but dry performance is largely the same.

I went for PS4S on the wife’s M2 and PSS on my 1M as it’s a summer car only, and I read responsiveness is slightly better on PSS due to a slightly stiffer sidewall. I do T feel much in it tbh but they are different cars and I’m no Lewis Hamilton :muttley:

You won’t go wrong with either.

Aesthetically the 4S have Michelin’s patented velvet sidewall, but the PSS have that chequered flag pattern either side of the Michelin branding, which looks cool.

Thank you guys!

Someone else also just told me the PS4S respond better in cold/wet weather but after thinking about it for a min, I remembered my M3 is a summer car only and the tyres will get wet only when I wash it :muttley:

You can get PS4S star rated in the OEM 19" front size (245/35/19). It's a recent release, not a lot of people know about it and it might be hard to find them available though.

I read the PS4 (not PS4S) was more of a direct replacement for the MPSS.

I went PSS star rated for my OCD, and the fact that my car is purely a summer toy as well.

I’ve always loved the Supersports to be honest.

My advice would be to check which tyres Michelin recommend for our M3 on their website.

The last time I checked, they only recommended the PSS and one of the Cup tyres.

Star marked PSS were not made for or tested on the e92 M3, they didn’t even come out until 2011 in non Star marked form.

I’m 99% sure the 245/265 combo was Star marked for the M2 in 2016. (I had Star marked PSS on my M135i in Dec 2012 but those were 18’s and my M2 was June 2016)

The Star marked Michelin for the E92 M3 from the factory was the PS2.

I have one set 220M with PS4S and an other set 218M with PSS, I think the PSS offer better handling overall and especially in high speed, way more stability.
On the other hand the PS4S are like magic in the wet.

Hey Guys, do you know whether the BMW dealerships still price match on tyres? How much does it cost to get new tyres fitted at a dealer these days? PSS I guess.
By the way there is no PS4S for one of the axels on the 18" wheels.

If I recall correctly, Michelin did extensive testing of the PSS with the E9X M3 before the tyre's release. Hence why it is recommended for our cars by Michelin.

I may even have some old BMW and EVO mags with it in:)

My dealer uses Stapletens and I can order tyres from Camskils for less than the dealer. So although they cannot price match, I order and have the tyres delivered to them.

I imagine there are other dealers that have a different set up and can price match. Phone up and ask your local to see.

I’ve just had a set of PS5’s fitted to my sons Clio.
Costco were the cheapest.

Thanks. Wow, would they be keen to do that? I suspect only some of them would be..., but then did they balance and fit them for 50 pounds per wheel?

Definitely the PS4S was a replacement for MPSS and PS4 was replacement of PS3

Non national chain tyre shop I use charges about a tenner a tyre to swap and balance a new tyre I supply. They also take the worn out tyre off my hands otherwise local council tip charge me to dump them there.

Occasional swaps at a local national chain are done for a donation to the lads tea fund, but they won't take the old tyre off me.
