M2 M-performance differential

Hi all,

I’ve recently brought an M2comp Which I love. So different to my F80.

It came with m performance suspension and a new Remus exhaust. I have all the OEM parts including a differential.
The dealer said he replaced the stock with An m performance one.

Is there such a thing as an mperformace diff and what’s the difference from stock?

I think the M performance diff was for the M lites (235i, 240i etc) the m2 already has a proper limited slip diff

That’s what I thought. So was confused why I have a spare diff.

Maybe its been swapped for a wavetrac one or something

Or it was filled with the wrong fluid and the clutch packs are fubar...

FWIW, I think the M2C's M diff absolutely defines the character of the car.

It is a proper piece of kit so I can't imagine why anybody would ever consider replacing it. Unless they were generally clueless or had minced the old one.

The M2C's diff is electronic and controls the level of lock depending on speed, steering angle, grip etc etc. It essentially alters the wheelbase of the car depending on what you are doing with the car at any given time. Nice and open on high speed fast, tightening on the slower tighter b road stuff. You can feel it winding on and off as you flow through the corners.

How can i check if my diff is non OEM? Is there and easy way to visibly see?

I’ve got a spare BMW one that came with the car. That’s why I’m confused. Are they easy to locate on the car?

Yes. Look at the one you have spare vs pictures of what an M2 Differential should look like on eBay and confirm they are the same. Then, look in the middle of the car between the rear wheels and see if that looks the same as either the spare on the eBay pictures.

Based on your questions though, maybe take some pictures of the spare and what's on the car and post them up?
