    Agreed the 997 turbo is in my opinion the best looking 911, the proportions are so right.

    The turbos are really on a high at the moment and rightly so, very good cars, I’m not convienenced it will last though

    Had a 2003 996 turbo for nearly 4 years.
    It was remapped and running 500bhp and it was bonkers, the grip level were sublime also.

    I actually like the fried egg headlights on it, made it look different to the boxster (the whole point they changed to them as complaints from owners in the early model 996 911)

    All in all it was an amazing car to own, done long distance touring and track days in it.

    Was lucky enough to buy it when they bottomed out and sold it 18months ago so made a bit of money on it also which influenced my decision to sell it as it wasn't getting used that much due to work.

    Haven't driven a 997 or 991 so cant compare.
    Best thing is to test drive one if you can and see for yourself.

    I have got a 996 turbo , had it for years. Its a pretty amazing car.

    I have been to look at the 997 turbo a few times even had a deal to swap for £2k to a 997 turbo. But habe stuck with the 996 as it is not a daily ride.

    The 997 turbo is a fantastic car by any standard, the only difference from where i sat was they are a chunk more modern than the 996 in every way. This in a way is what i really like about the 996 turbo, the dials are like the old turbos, the interior is not utra modern. The 997 dash is modern, with updated dial fonts and switch gear seats etc. The driving dynamics are more forgiving, the 996 turbo still feels raw.

    I have modern cars that we drive every day, but when i drive the 996 turbo its a step back. A step back to where i want to be sat in something different.

    But a well felteled one is certainly an impressive car to cover ground in.

    Get one.

    Went from my E46 to a 996T over 3 years ago now, still got it.

    Superb car, not as ridiculous to run as you might think unless any of the big ticket items are due (turbos/clutch etc) comparable to my old M in terms of cost.

    In standard form it's 'only' 420bhp, but is an incredibly quick car (190+) in almost any situation and the grip is pretty astonishing. Always toying with the idea of selling it when I'm at work, but then get home and drive it again and forget all that.

    And that arse is one of the best looking ever IMO. :thumbsup:

    Any of the Turbos are good cars.....prices are on the up and have been for a while now.

    996 or 997......well the 997 does look a lot more modern... but you can’t go wrong with a manual Mezger.
    I’ve had mine over 2 years now and can’t see me selling it anytime soon.

    The majority of the 996tt in my budget are tips. Will I be loosing much going auto ?
    or better off going tip ?

    The prices started to soften at the end of 2017. Can see it in the prices the specialist dealers are asking. Private sales are asking the same figures ...

    Manual turbos will be more sort after then the tips and prices are showing this.
    If you can get a manual.

    If I was looking again I'd certainly consider a Tip. Auto box really suits the power/torque delivery so I'm told cos there's heaps of it available in any gear, and if you opt for more power further down the line then there's no clutch upgrade to consider.

    There's a lot of folk converted Tips to proper paddle shifters and had the box re-mapped, with very good results.

    The auto is terrible by todays standard, I'd stick with the manual if I were you.

    Conflicting opinions on the tip box. What does remapping do on the box?

    I can live with the interior, though I am considering rebuilt 997.1 too, the ones with new liners etc. Seen a really nice one with GT3 kit CS2 in manual, but that has had a new engine, but not the work.

    You're probably better off asking this question on 911UK, getting opinions from members who actually own all the variations.

    As far as I know the box can be made to operate much quicker etc. 9 Excellence run some seriously big power tiptronic cars, and map the box to suit with little modification. A good few people have fitted Merc paddle shifters DIY too.

    Nothing wrong with a rebuilt 997 either, lovely cars, but you'll always be asking yourself if you should have bought a turbo......

    Yes the tip box can be mapped but won’t be anything like the PDK box.

    Manual in the 996 or 997.1 is the best option

    I've been asking questions on the 911uk forum, the thing is they're Porsche fanboys, I'm after a 2nd opinion.

    I'll prefer a manual, but I'm considering tip as well.

    I had ago in a Tip and PDK Turbos ......PDK is excellent the tip wasn’t for me.
    I went for a late low mile Gen1 turbo Manual

    Seen a couple of 997.1tt go for £45k, but most are in the 50s.
    The 996tt I'm looking at are weighing in around £30-33k. Also looked at a 02 996tt 6MT 70k miles, for £39K, which is more than I'd like to spend, especially when specialists are knocking them out at that price, is a nice car though.

    There is a silver 997.1 6MT with a Hartech rebuilt engine on 80k miles for £26k which is a possibility, but it really needs an aero kit to finish it off.

    Saw a very nice looking cobalt blue GT3 aero 997.1 for £30k, had a new engine 40k miles ago, but with no remedial work, so that might end up as a £42k+ with 80k miles on the clock. Plus it's in NI so it'll be a pain to get a PPI done for bore score and overrevs etc.

    Also if I do end up with a non turbo, it'll probably won't be any quicker than my M3 ...

    Be careful of cheap Turbos there cheap for a reason...... you can easy blow big ££££££ if it requires some work.

    A 911 is a totally different animal to an N/A M3...... take a while to get use to, but one you do you will love it...
