My car seems to have quite a tappet type sound when cold - perfectly fine when warm.

I don't recall reading anyone else with this problem but thought I'd check.

S'pose I'll need to trapse over to the dealer to have it checked out.

I've had it on a few cars over the years, usually when an oil change is about due.

I've found it to be quite a ticky engine, so many of the performance cars i've owned have been quite like that.

Deadeye, I had a noticeable tick on mine when cold, but went away when the oil warmed up. Lived with it for quite a while as was convinced I was hearing things. It got worse as time went by, and had it looked at in the end. Turns out I wasn’t hearing things and a repair was needed. Turned out to be costly.
If in doubt, get it booked in I would say.

Just found the Warranty details and it was listed as ‘Camshaft carrier grooved’ and was diagnosed and repaired by Dealer within a few days.

Sadly not. They wouldn’t even give me a decent explanation as to what had caused it to happen. 19500 miles when it went in, although the tap had been noticeable for some time before that, albeit it had gotten louder, and always went quiet when up to temp.

Ok so as usual the service department see pretty inept.

I take the car in for a tapping on cold start and they sight a PUMA case where to 60kmh at slight throttle immediately after hot-start, the wste-gate rattles.

    1) I know what waste-gate rattle sound like, I had an N54 335i
    2) I said cold start - as the the documentation
    3) Not at speed - cold

    From the engine bay:

From the exhaust - near the end you can hear the mechanical noise through the exhaust

Sounds like the issue reported above.

Deadeye, was that with a stone cold engine, as in just off the cold start?

Yeah it's settled down after its initial higher revving cold cycle - been running for 2 mins max.
