This is the 1st time I’ve been offered a tax refund!

So how long does it take? Heard can take upto 14 WEEKS!!!

Been waiting 5 weeks so far

Think it’s abit of a joke bearing in mind if you send your self assessment in late you get a penalty pay the tax you owe you late you get a penalty plus you have to pay interest etc

But it’s ok for HMRC to hang onto your money making interest on the money they owe!
I’ve only asked for half of what they owe me and leave the rest in there as a credit etc- I would’ve thought it would be pretty easy to send it within a REASONABLE time frame?!

Bit of a Pi55 take really

    Rant over

I can't help with how long it should take but they managed to balls it up for me.

I was owed in the region of £20k and they amended my tax code to refund it - god knows why - anyway, after a few of months of reduced tax it was the end of the tax year and they suddenly put my tax code back to normal while still owing me around £10k.

After kicking up a storm - because they were adamant I must have had the refund; computer can't have got it wrong - I got a cheque a few weeks later.

You might have to ring them and give them some earache.

Just chase the tossers up... at the end of the day it's money you are owed. So many people must be oblivious to how much extra tax they've been paying all their lives and I find it naughty that you have to go out of your way to get a rebate/refund when it's technically a fault their end... most of us work too hard and don't get enough back from all this tax

Mine came back within 14 days.

Did you apply on the return for a repayment, including your bank details?
If you have a government gateway account you can log in there and at least see if it's being processed.

They are usually pretty quick with refunds. They don't like to be accused of owing you interest.. Even though they will charge you for daily interest if its tht other way around.

They are normally efficient with issuing a tax refund if you paid too much. When you do your self assessment there is a section where you put your bank details in if you paid too much. You could keep the money in so it can go towards the balancing payment for the following tax year as inevitably they will have it off you at some point lol.

On my select assessment the refund was requested via my Gateway login

    Gave them my bank details

Looked now my balance is still showing the full amount!

They're a nightmare. I have chased mine several times since November. Just checked my progress online and it's saying I've been sent a reply, which I haven't. So will ring them on Monday, again!
