So after picking up my M3 CP and finding out the original owner had not spec'd the extended storage option I had to work something out, as stuff rolling about the boot and the associated rattles would have driven me crazy. I could have just bought an aftermarket net from ebay and fitted it to the 4 hooks in the boot, but that would have meant it sat raised from the floor which I was not keen on so decided to go down the retrofit route, which was surprisingly easy, much easier than the power fold mirror retrofit I did on my A45! BMW also sell a net to fit like this for cars without extended storage.

    So the parts needed are:

1 x boot net, part number 7248530-03, this is for the F20/F30 and available on ebay for £12.49, unsure if this is the actual net supplied with entended storage but fits perfectly.

6 mounts, these are 2 parts per mount, part numbers 51478146941, 51478146943, from Cotswolds for about £26.

First job is to mark out the holes down each side, mask up and the measurements are as follows (all measured from the back seat)

    Nearest back seat 20.50cm
    Middle 55.00cm
    Nearest back of car 89.50cm
All sit 5.00cm from the edge

I was given these by a fellow cutter, some of the holes have indents on the underside so you could use these as markers if you wanted too.

Now to drill the holes using a 25mm tank cutter, they could do with being 26mm so once I was through I just angled the drill to open them up a little.

Two part mounts/clips, push the bigger bit through from the bottom and clip the cap into place from above, they do take some strength to clip together.

    All fitted and hovered.

    Net fitted.

    And floor back in boot.

Looks good! Brave cutting into the boot floor.

If you want to be extra “special” the 4 outer clips are at 45degree angle, if you take a look at the pic I posted it will show you what I mean :)

Haha, I very nearly put them at an angle too, I'm trying not to go out and twist them round, how long will I last!

Just did this and the guide was great, thanks op.

I'd add that if you look at the bottom face you'll see 4 circular dipped impressions which you can then find the centre of and drill up to create pilot holes. That way you only have to measure the holes at the boot end.

Also I used a 26mm hole saw and I'd say it was the right size

    Nice job.
Are these dimensions the same for the F83?

I have got aN OEM rubber boot lining to protect my boot floor from crap from my golf clubs and my net is inaccessible. Didn’t think to get the clips and retrofit them into the rubber liner. Might need to make it less stretched to avoid the lining bending though.

Did this today, thanks for the guide. 4 of the holes are actually marked with indents in the boot floor which makes it easier.

what I would say though is this net is only good for shallow items, not as useful as I thought it would be, the 4 point net would probably see more use

Great retrofit, what I can’t understand is why the M4 gets 2 awesome bag hooks in the boot, but the M3 doesn’t. These I find extremely useful.

Because the M4 is favoured by girlies who like bags.:D

Purely because the M4 driver attracts girlies who like bags, M3 drivers are generally weighed down by kids, hence 4 doors :p
