So are you saying that if not opening the LSD unit, as no point, it's just a bearing change and no more involved or magical than changing bearings in an old live axle car or non LSD car?

    Yep,

Buy BMW shims which I have outlined the part number in my DIY.

Understand how the shims work and how they alter the tolerance.

Know the tolerance your aiming for. ( Outlined in my DIY)

Know what the correct pattern looks like and how to change bearings.

    Bobs your uncle.

Ps. If your not changing the crown wheel and pinion then it's very very basic.

Hydraulic press and a dremel is all that's needed to change the bearings. Along with a inch lbs torque wrench. Dial gauge only needed if you have mixed up yours shims or changed the gears. Or of your paranoid and want to triple check. I would personally have a dial gauge ready to check.

Doesn't work in the Williams factory by Banbury by any chance does he? That's where I bought mine from about 18 months ago.

Used to mate but now running the heritage workshop for Mercedes F1. Did you get your car from A certain M3 dealer near Williams factory?

No mate. Bought it from one of the employees called John and actually collected it from there. He was in safety systems or something but told me that the engineers did a bit of work on it including plating the boot floor.

I had mine done by JC Racing great service really happy with it. It's now got the V8 internals now which I think gets rid of one of the issues of the unequal length on the output shafts of the standard E46 one.

It’s a slightly better diff, and fitted to the last of the e46 m3’s. you’ll actually find that the LH output shaft will have the play and not the RH as they changed the side the planetary gears work. On a plus side you can buy the clutch plates for this diff once they wear out.

Are the E36 Evo diff innards inside an E46 M3 casing still a better or desirable option over a standard rebuilt E46 M3 diff ?

I was told they are better 'out of the turns', is that true ?

Yeah, was found in some later spec E46 m3 too. The picture under your user name is that later spec LSD.

this diff was fitted in my car under warranty, about 2005 no reason given bmw just did it ,, good news if plates can be purchased. Is there any parts numbers available??? Plan on fitting new carrier bearings soon as the originals had slight wear when I last had it down, plates would be a bonus if are available for the future

Also to add, had a discussion on csl forum regarding different diffs fitted on csl,s, If I remember correctly , internally it was believed were the same as older diffs , but I really not got a clue personally,,
