Clunky noise - is it the diff?

So I got my F80 serviced by a main dealer in December. They also changes a diff seal and the oil that goes with it.

I feel the diff is now clunky - not sure if this is normal.

Essentially, when I decelerate I feel a clunk, thud noise from towards the back of the car. It happens again when I accelerate. It only happens at low speeds. It feels like something may be loose.

Has anyone else had this? Is it normal?

I had diff issues with mine, I had a hum and at RIS BMW changed it under warranty, the sound didn't really go away, took it back and I had the output shaft seal changed, oil changed and one of the drive shafts changed all under warranty. I also had the oil changed again under warranty as a precaution/semi run-in procedure for the diff. The sound got a lot better but I'm not convinced it's fully gone. According to the dealer and comparing it to other M's they had in at the time, it sounds the same now.

I'd take it back and get it checked out if I was you.

i tried to explain this in another post..

What i found with mine was that when on a spirited drive it would clonk more, i.e. if i was constantly on and off the power at high speed/revs. But when i drive sedate i dont hear it.... unless i am slowing for a junction crawling to the end and then put power on (not aggressively) then i get a clonk then, but that feels more like the car is not guessing the gear and seems surprised i want to accelerate.

Its been in to BMW and they say doesnt seem anything different from others they had in.

Your issue sounds more gearbox related than diff to me?

I wonder if the diff bolts, drive shaft bolts and prop shaft flange bolts are all tight? It's worth checking as it's free :)

the second part maybe yes. The first sounds like a thud on the diff, but yes could be.

Either way i reported a "noise" from the rear, they investigated and said nothing wrong. so at least i have a record of it....

Could be the way that it's all mounted as well, attributing to your problem. IIRC it's all solidly mounted.

I had my driver's side diff seal replaced, didn't really notice much difference in noise after it was replaced, I have a manual gearbox tho, I am sure I read in the owners manual that noises from the rear are a normal part of the car, I would need to read through it again to be sure.

Some noises are normal due to the fact it's solidly mounted.

Some, not all. If in doubt, take it back for a second opinion is what I would do, warranty is there to cover you just in case. I had an odd noise, that I thought was normal and turned out not to be and had parts replaced under warranty.

Hi, resurrecting this as mine had a rear end clunking noise today, only when in MDM mode. Taking foot off accelerator to slow down, then giving it a little, not a lot of gas and 'CLUNK' it's 100% repeatable. It's not a clicking noise, its a really noticeable clunk. Its a 67 plate with 17,000 miles, auto.
    Is this really normal?

That’s the same as mine. Only really notice it if in spirited mode, on and off gas and yes I can force it to happen
