Always had a problem with my PDC, random constant tone, crazy beeping etc. usual stuff.
Decided to get the bumper off and find out which sensor(s) are faulty.
Used INPA to monitor the readings and swapped them about to find the faulty one(s). Turns out one is completely dead (although clicks just as loud as the other 3) and another is intermittant.
    Got a price of £132 each :eek::eek:

Being the cheapskate that I am, I hit ebay looking for some cheapys

Got 4 of these for £16 each:

They arrived today so I gave them a go. Result is very strange.
For some weird reason these sensors will only work in the middle plugs!
The two edge ones don't work, just stay stuck at value of 100 in INPA!
It's not that two are faulty or anything like that because i've swapped them around any which way and it's always the same.

Does anyone know if there's anything I can do to get them working? Do they have to be coded or calibrated or anything like that? (couldn't see anything like that in INPA)
Seems really weird they work fine in the middle two plugs but not in the corner plugs

That is odd.....I had the RHS sensor go, replaced it with a £25 ebay job and it worked fine.

Well I got a couple of different ones off eBay, says on them "6 989 069", but these are the same, work in middle locations but not in corner locations.
So looks like I'm gonna have to fork out for genuine ones, 66206989067 part number, got a price of £83 each now, but unpainted.

Euan, was it a corner or middle one you replaced?

It's a nightmare finding out what's what with these things, there's so many different ones on eBay and most say they're compatible with a range of part numbers but obviously they're not!
Even the part numbers on my original ones don't seem to match up with anything on realoem?

Hmmm, came across this listing on eBay from a US seller:

    NEW-PDC-PARKING-SENSOR-for-BMW-E46-316-318-320-323-325-328-330-66206911831-/251272116922

    He clearly states:
    Note to E46 car owners:
this sensor can only work in the middle two position for part of E46 cars, if your right or left side sensor was broken, you can change one of your original middle sensor to the broken position, then install this sensor at the middle position .

 wish I'd found this before
So I will send back the eBay ones and get genuine

If you still have two originals that still work, why don't you mix them up with 2 ebay ones in the correct places??

I could do that, but the point is they're obviously not the right sensors. The originals are identical and they work in any position, the cheapy ones don't so there's a difference. And anyway I suspect a third one might be intermittant as well, I really wanted to just change all four and be done with it!

Also, when I asked one of the ebay sellers if I could return the first ones that I got, he came back saying the exact same thing - they don't work in corner positions!
So he was aware but didn't put it in the listing, let me order a set of four knowing full well two of them wouldn't work - nice of him - will be sure to give him some 'nice' feedback once I have my money back :roflmao:

Found a solution at last !
After lots of searching I found a few comments suggesting that Landrover Discovery ones are the same as E46. Ordered a set off eBay, genuine Landrover, brand new, and it turns out they do indeed work fine!
(in both the middle and corner positions unlike the unbranded cheapy ones)

I paid £15 each, so £60 set of 4. That's less than the price of 1 from BMW :roflmao:
If anyone goes looking for some, apparently they are a lot cheaper than BMW even from a Landrover dealer, so even if you can't find any on eBay, then you should still be able to save few quid

The connectors are very slightly different, there is a little plastic ridge that doesn't quite match, just snipped it off and then fits perfect!

Good advice. I have just ordered a genuine BMW one painted from BMMiniparts. They did me a deal but still cost £107 delivered! Problem is I think I need 2 but will see how I go....

How did you go about getting these Land Rover sensors colour coded to your car?

Nice one toMpower. Nice write up. Any chance of sending us a link to the eBay seller you used? Cheers.

Slight thread resurrection - I need to buy 1 of these to replace a faulty sensor - are they all identical (i.e. are the corner ones the same as the middle ones - so if I buy the Land Rover part above, it'll defo fit and work fine?).

(this looks to be the case from toMPower's post above....).

    Many thanks!

    Yep, all 4 identical.
Have worked fine ever since (8 months now).
Just make sure to get genuine Landrover ones (Valeo), the cheap ebay ones whether intended for bmw or landrover or whatever just don't work properly in the outer positions on our cars!

Thanks mate - (talk about delayed reponse! :) ). Ended up buyign two used ones for £18 the pair in the end - and they've been fine for a few months now - will replace with new if they go again!

My car is Carbon Black - so the "unpainted" fininsh is as per OEM on my car.

    Guys, a thread revival here.

I had similar problems with aftermarket cheapy ebay sensors. They just don't work.

Is the cost effective way still to get the Land Rover Discovery ones? Will cheapy ones work here or must they be genuine Land Rover?
