I'm going to view an F80 M3 from a private seller tomorrow.

I've never spent so much money on a private sale so just want to be sure that the car doesn't have a hidden past or any outstanding finance.

Any recommended sites or apps that offer a comprehensive service?
IIRC Autotrader offer a service but the guarantee is on £30k should they get it wrong.

Id prefer to pay a bit more to get piece of mind.

    Thanks
    Rob

    Hi Rob,

I'm one of the co-founders / developers of Vehicle Smart.

The app will give you the basic info for free and then we have paid vehicle checks with £10K and £30K data guarantees.

I'lll be happy to answer any questions you have :D

Thanks mate. I'm going to get the check done. I think the most important thing for me is outstanding finance, as don't want to pay £45k for a car which could in theory have £50k finance owing. How accurate are these apps/sites? Where do you get your information from?

    Thanks. Rob

    Rob,

Most cars will have finance on them, ask the vendor for the settlement figure BMW send one out in the post after you ring them for the figure.

    Good luck today

    Hi Rob,

All vehicle checking sites & apps use largely the same data sources as most data is centralised in to a few databases.

The data is mostly accurate although I came do across various errors with DVLA, DVSA, and MIB data (incomplete, missing or wrong) every week. When we find these issues, we feed them back to the relevant party.

Some data is time dependent i.e. if a plate was changed on a vehicle yesterday and you checked the vehicle today, the plate change wouldn't be shown as the DVLA database wouldn't have been updated yet. There can be also be a lag on DVLA data being updated as when the DVLA make changes, they will pass these changes on to various vehicle data purchasers and this data could be supplied once or twice a month via a DVD. Old school eh?

    Our sources include;

    - DVLA
    - DVSA
    - Motor Insurance Bureau
    - Police National Computer
    - Vehicle Certification Agency
    - Experian (finance)

Vehicle checkers will use all or a combination of the above and the main variation will come in to play on the finance aspect as there are several credit checking agencies.

All the credit checking agencies purchase and supply the same data and there can be small variations on when each credit agency is informed of a finance change. Some agencies are updated before others but they generally all update within a few hours of each other.

    Hope that helps

I use HPi's offical site for any finance or accidents.
Then Cazana to see how many previous owners or old for sale adverts, reg plate changes etc.
Vehicle smart is good for checking old MOT's what its failed on and making sure the miles add up

Being in this arena, I'm keen to know what make's people think the HPI check is different from any others and what we can do different to increase conversions.

HPI have a strong brand but in terms of the data, it's the same. The only difference will be the credit checking.

HPI were originally a credit check company and have expanded their data over the years to include more & more.

Experian again are a credit checking company, just minus the additional vehicle data.

Feel free to PM if required
