    Hi guys,

I have a 2015 m4 m, so I have the older version I drive m, therefore I cannot purchase CarPlay through connected drive. I believe I have two options:

    1. Full hardware retrofit Via someone like ian. I assume this gives full compatibility, including the updated idrive, screen etc. I’m not sure if there’s any concessions And it’s not quite the same as a later model car? Also not sure of the price?

    2. You can buy a kit from the us that retrofits the kit via the aux function in the idrive menu. It looks like you remove some trip and physically connect an iPhone cable and the kit?

The connected drive subscription is up on my car and it’s not exactly cheap to renew. I really like the CarPlay interface, especially now they have added Waze functionality as of iOS 12. It will provide live traffic updates (negating need for connected drive rtti) and speed camera locations.

Has anyone got experience of either or the above options and any advantages or disadvantages of either ?

    Cheers

Retrofit the ID6 and screen/controller is the best way. But around £2000 ultimately.

I love carplay in my daily, but the screen is quite far away in the M3. Not sure I will bother with mine.

What makes you say that Chris? Is the retrofit mmi kit no good?

At 2k I’d probably put that toward changing the m4 into an m3 as I could do with the extra two doors. Just a shame as trying to find another car with options like mine is hard (full black leather is a must for me). Another car I’ve been looking at is the 540i xdrive or waiting a while and get a macan s or gts. Decisions decisions

Bump... Has anyone tried this retrofit ?

    It seems there’s two options:

Full retrofit done by someone like ian - about 2k

This retrofit bimmer tech kit - about 500 bucks

If the bimmer tech kit does the trick then I think I’d be willing to go for it. Just looking to see if anyone here in the uk has done it. Having Waze integrated on CarPlay is a real bonus!

    Thanks

That’s the same as the bimmertech and £375 is the cheapest I’ve seen

You can buy a box from Japan it’s what all the companies use anyway but it’s £360 delivered and you may get hit with import duty so the link above is probably a better shout

I did the full oem ID6 retrofit on my own 2014. It came to over £2k but included touch screen, Rtti, connected drive, CarPlay etc. I wasn’t a fan of CarPlay but it was slightly better when I got the touch screen working. Using it via the I drive controller wasn’t much fun. Also bear in mind, it doesn’t work through the HUD.

I actually preferred to use the standard BMW i drive

I was very impressed with the Bimmer tech plug in emulator when I played with one last week. Easy to fit and works almost as well as oem.

Thanks Ian. That's interesting about the HUD. If I went for the Bimmer tech plug in emulator, for the sole purpose of using apple car play, would I not be able to change tracks on spotify using the steering wheel controls combined with the HUD? The spotify app is great but it's quite buggy on the older idrive in my car, sometimes it doesn't link up with the car properly. I've had hire cars with the later idrive and the spotify connected drive integratation is much better.

The other main drive for wanting car play is to be able to use waze and see it on the idrive screen, as opposed to having to use my iphone screen. I find Waze much better than than the BMW sat nav and refuse to pay the connected drive fee for live traffic information.

Can you please give a bit more of a review of the bimmer tech carplay emulator and the lack of HUD functionality i.e. can you not change spotify tracks using it? Thanks :)
