It's a bit of a scam calling it ID7. That's just a skinned Android headunit.

no its actually running the ID7 software is my understanding and totally replicates the ID7 interface and no functionality is lost when swapping over and its also plug and play so can be fitted yourself.

I have inquired about a group buy for say 5 units as really keen to pull the trigger but wanted to gather anyone else's thoughts / views first and see if anyone had fitted this as unit looks great and its a massive upgrade for all those running older head units as adds touchscreen / android auto / Apple car play plus a much richer interface with no loss of functionality on old system. Also increases screen size to 10.25"

Sorry chief, it says in the ad it's running "id7 menus" and that, along with some other bits of info in the article basically mean it is one of the android units that run alongside the Idrive6 software, and allow you switch between your car and the skinned android software on the device.

Now, if that's what you want, then there's nothing wrong with those units at all. It's a handy way to get android auto, media streaming and a bigger screen. But is definitely not running id7... For instance, there will be no menus to change the HUD settings.

These also don’t work on cars that have iDrive 5, they work on earlier cars with iDrive 4.

Yeah Ill echo above. These units just look like the OEM skin and will display various canbus related car info but usually you need to hit a button combo to get back into the OEM system for settings changes. Thing is a carplay unit is usually about £350-400 so if youre going to shell that out then this is worthy of consideration as well.

I’ve got the original idrive fitted in 2014, whatever that is. Is there a proper BMW way to upgrade to a later version without having emulator boxes for vin numbers and things like that, like I had to do with my E92 when I went from CCC to CIC?

Probably cheaper to trade cars if you're not doing it yourself.

I could do the work myself, but I don’t know whether you can just get the later unit from BMW and get it properly coded by them or something, as a true BMW approved retrofit.
I think it’s been done as a diy in the past, but you don’t get all the functionality and integration.

The answer to your question is no. Unless theyve changed things recently. There’s no incentive for BMW to help owners to upgrade key hardware in an older car in place of selling them a new car.

I’m pretty sure Bavarian coding can do it. Simon will confirm. Can also get 10.25 OEM bmw screen (was touchscreen too)

cheers I’ll look into that. Last time I looked though it didn’t carry over 100% functionality.

Thanks. :) I’d just like to use an oem id7 unit without an add on box or emulator or anything. Just to bring the car up to date without using an android box or something.

I’m pretty sure @sonnyb has an upgraded factory nav, not sure if it’s ID7 but he might be able to offer some help/advice.

Mine is upgraded to ID6 with touchscreen but this was done by the previous owner, the late, great Ian Alpina.
Works perfectly, but as far as I know ID6 was the latest fitted to any M3/4, so not sure if anyone has done a ID7 retrofit.
There is an outfit called 'Jay BMW Retrofits' based near Chelmsford who do this sort of thing and they may know if you really want this
