    Hi all,

    Just thought I share.

I have managed to find a workaround that does not involve a 12v -5v charging adapter (well on the doc connector anyway).

So bought one of these, an Alpine KCE-422i Highspeed adapter lead that has already been modded for 5v charging.

Received a faulty KCA-420i lead in the post (I wont mention from whom, but he knows who he is), many thanks.

So did some pinout out testing on both leads, this involved buying a ipod doc test module (so I knew which of the pins from the doc plug were needed), and then finding out what pin from the doc lead when to which pin in both the alpine leads.

Surprisingly both KCA and KCE lead have the exact number of pins and the same pins are used from doc to alpine plug (handy).

Soldered the wires from each of the leads and the triple checked the KCA-420i plug with the doc, the new lead now looks and works (as in connectivity wise) exactly like a non modded KCA-420i lead. (not in pic, I tided the wires and inside of the box before I put it together)

Finished lead; as you can see, the power converter is a long way from the doc so its no where near as bulky at the doc end.

Lead in Car with an ipod touch.

As you can see its charging on 5v only with no clunky adapter at the Doc end.

Hope this helps others [IMG] its by no means a hard job, but the wires are very fine so its fiddly.

And before anyone asks, no I wont make you one!!

Normally I would offer mate, but I'm in the middle of a project and just dont have the time.

Once I have finished the project I might look and doing a few for people though.

It would also require your KCA lead as a doner and cutting up a working good lead is an alien concept to me, lol.

Let me know when you start making a few up and i'll get an intravee then :D

This has been the only reason i've not ordered 1 yet as I don't want a pile of adaptors connected :D

So I've recently completed this for myself - I ordered the KCA-422i cable, but noticed the colours of the wires didn't match to what John noted in the original post. After confirming the pinout of each cable I was left with the following:
    Code:
KCE-422i pin iPod Dock pin Notes
    1 3 Grey (Line-out, Right +)
    2 21 Purple (Accessory Indicator)
    3 12 Blue (Serial Tx)
    4 4 White (Line-out, Left +)
    5 23 Red (USB +5VDC [in])
    6 18 Yellow (+3.3VDC [out])
    7 13 Green (Serial Rx)
    8 2 Brown (Line-out, Common GND)
    9 11 Orange (Serial GND)
    10 16 Black (USB GND)
    Jacket 29/30 Shield (FireWire GND)
    Code:
KCA-420i pin iPod Dock Pin Notes
    1 15/16 Red (USB GND)
    2 18 Brown (+3.3VDC [out])
    3 13 Blue (Serial Rx)
    4 12 Yellow (Serial Tx)
    5 11 Green (Serial GND)
    6 29/30 Black (FireWire GND)
    7 21 Grey (Accessory Indicator)
    8 N/A N/A
    9 3 Blue/core (Line-out, Right +)
    10 2 Blue/White outer (Line-out, Common GND)
    11 4 White/core (Line-out, Left +)
    12 N/A N/A
    13 19/20 Purple (FireWire +12VDC [in])
    Jacket Shield
The the change is to pin19/20 to pin23 on the iPod Dock Connector with the charging adaptor inbetween. So if you cut both cables and solder together as I believe John did (and I did) you end up with the following:
    Code:
    KCA-420i KCE-422i Notes
    Blue/core Grey Line-out, Right +
    Grey Purple Accessory Indicator
    Yellow Blue Serial Tx
    White/core White Line-out, Left +
Purple Red FireWire +12VDC [in] / USB +5VDC [in] (P+ and Acc respectively on charging adaptor)
    Brown Yellow +3.3VDC [out]
    Blue Green Serial Rx
Blue/White outer Brown Line-out, Common GND
    Green Orange Serial GND
    Red Black USB GND
Black Shield FireWire GND (G and GND respectively on charging adaptor)

I appreciate this is an old thread and an old mod, but might be useful to people looking at it this many years on. Thanks to John for his info and help

I'm also using a 30pin to Lightning adaptor and works perfectly on my iPhoneXS
