Now I know this will start a thread of fear, with people being made bankrupt and their children taken off them but I’m looking for factual advice based on experience, not what happened to a friend called Dave.

After many years of being clean I’ve just had a notice of intended prosecution through.

Clocked by a manned unit doing 47 in a 30. It’s not as bad as it sounds as it was on a national speed limit road that goes into a 30 and out within 100 metres. Well played by the mobile unit, clearly a favourite spot.

I will obviously provide the details but what am I looking at, with a clean license any chance I will get away with a speed awareness course?

It is all about percentages and that must be close. I got a course for 40 in a 30 (the road used to be a 40 but recently changed) You might get lucky

Tut Tut, you Criminal !! I would not worry to much, at most it will be 3 points and whatever the fine is now. You might even get a speed awareness course.

No you wont get a speed awareness course. Not at that speed. Max you can be doing in a 30 is about 38/39 to get on the course.

Will just be a straight 3 points. Dont worry too much though there arent many around without a few points. Might put your insurance up by a few quid but its nothing to worry about.

52 in a 30 and it was a normal road not the same as your situation, I got a standard fine and 3 points, I was told that 54 was the cut off any higher and it was a court appearance.

You will get 3 points and £100 fine.

In a 30 limit, you will be offered a speed awareness course if you are up to and including 42mph.

    Cheers guys,

So 3 points looks to be what I’m facing. It’s been a while since I was last caught and was worried about about how much over I was going, 47 in a 30 sounds pretty bad.

Seems the reviews are right though, the Alfa really is quicker than the M4....

Has the speeding fine structure changed recently to be based on salary?

Yes but I believe that it's only used in extreme cases, if you take it on the chin and weren't trying to break the land speed record then should be ok.

Tell your insurance but it may not change the premium.
Mine didn't but it was a few years ago now and things could have changed.

You won't get a speed awareness at that speed. I got clocked doing 42 in a 30 and got a speed awareness course many years ago. I think 42 is the absolute highest limit for a speed awareness course or at least it was back then.

It'll be 3 points and £100 fine (pretty sure it's £100 fine). Make sure you notify your insurance as well.

Send all letters back as recorded delivery as well - I had one get lost by Royal Mail and it turned into a nightmare. Once you send back the letter admitting who was driving, you'll get a letter back with the offer of a course (if eligible) or notification of points & fine.
