I did something similar to pull the input flange back on the pinion to do it properly

Sadly don't have a drift either.

I've just tried getting a bit of heat into the other side hub, but it doesn't seem to have helped. The shaft is going in, but just not far enough and I don't want to damage the c/v's with too much impact force.

You've said the half shaft splines are clean, but have you cleaned the hubs as well? Start with a fine nose pick and scrap the channels to ensure you feel zero resistance. You should also be able to use the pick to remove anything you feel. Then a stiff wire brush and degreasers.

Finally I applied plenty of lube to both surfaces and it should slide right in.

If you have a fridge bid enough, you can also stick the half-shafts in overnight.

Sorry - if you've already tried this.

Both hubs and half shafts are new. That said, I'm going to try giving each a very deep clean with fine emery and try that. Won't be uyntil next week now though. I'm not sure the half shaft will fit in the freezer, but I may well give it a try!!!
