In the interest of balance though. They're clearly very spec and mileage sensitive without wanting to state the obvious!!!

Grey leather is another marmite area.

It's time to set the record straight.

There is more to it! That was however IMHO a cheap/fairly priced car and decent it was.

Not so fast!

Right, I saw both cars in the flesh, and even took the effort to check out the history.

I have never been fussy about leather etc. as the forums seem to make out but here is my take on the two cars.

Before anything I'll say one thing. Super low mileage stuff sells very well at CCA, and I've seen some dubious vehicles go through ; I.e the condition of the interior didn't tally up with me or under the bonnet. But that's for another time.

Interlagos Blue Car
-Even if you take mileage out of the equation this car was better by miles! But I'll now say why.
-IME Individual Cars always make big money at CCA auctions? Proof I hear you ask?

https://www.classiccarauctions.co.uk...30-convertible
https://www.classiccarauctions.co.uk...ci-convertible

People were practically wanking over the mileage of that Purple car and the seat IMHO didn't look like 19k's worth. Town car or not I'd expect a perfect seat at that mileage.

Back to the M3.

-The car was very very well presented and I'm sure the colour helped: It was gorgeous in that Blue! It had clearly been loved, and it gleamed like nobody's business. It looked immaculate to many.
-I have rarely seen a car sold with a ring binder/sleeve combo detailing the history of a car so well! It's certainly given me thoughts on how I keep my history in a folder in a messy but chronological way!
-The interior was also near immaculate, better than the purple 330Ci IMHO.
-As far as I could tell there was nothing "hugely" wrong with it. Most of the big jobs had been done and it's clear the owner had spent a fortune. I mentally counted 3k over this year as I flicked through the receipts. I suspect this is why the car was being sold. A shame.
-Flaws? I am being very picky here! The lenses were a little peppered in appearance like mine were before I changed them. The wings were "slightly" rough on the inside lips when I felt them : maybe this is why the front end was blown over by BMW at great expense ; it was either rust or underseal but possibly the latter. I was going to see if it was underseal but it was tight in the auction house ; they didn't display many cars outside with it being freezing!

Bar the minor details, a great buy indeed! I probably would not have noticed the lenses if I didn't change mine or respray my front end!

So now, the final one I'll keep it short:

Grey/Grey car
-Initially, like any BMW it looked good. It was shiny and IMO the guy was being harsh about the interior ; it looked good all round!

And now I get started

-The front wings were beginning to bubble on the outer lips
-The car clearly had been polished/mopped hard ; it had that strange blooming/various colour tone look in places that I've seen from hard mopping before and that was visible inside a lit hall!
-The discs were tired all round and the fronts worn ; the bells had been painted black on all of the discs too! I've never seen that on an M3.
Maybe it was because they were ATE discs and he wanted them to look nicer; Or to hide how tired the discs were.
-The trim going around both side windows was shiny black ; again I've not seen that before. Not a biggie but it makes you ask questions
-Tyres were all over 10 years old on it and close to the limit, despite being Contis ; were they all part-worns on it?
-The history. What history? If the CCA guy wasn't there I'd have taken a photo. I've rarely seen cars at 10k of that age with such a **** history. It was laughable.

Sure, it had the full booklet set and handbook. Servicing stamps? None ; all it had was some handwriting down for the RIS and an MOT certificate. That's it! I find it amusing that it had 3 stars down against the servicing. It may have had a new prop bearing and guibo. There was zero evidence to show it however!

In short, that car IMHO wanted 2k minimum throwing at it and to get it to the standard of the Individual car would have taken a lot more! To me the Grey/Grey car looked like a typical cheap M3 : used, abused with some potential present, but with a very patchy history.

Considering it was down as being in the same condition as the Blue car in the description I'd have put it more towards an 80 if I am honest. It's not the first time I've seen this however at CCA; A few of us saw a very rough DC2 ITR sold under similar pretences.

Finally

FWIW you deal directly with CCA when buying the cars, not the owners ; I bought a retro from there not too long ago. I paid CCA, got the paperwork from the CCA agents and then went on my way.

Hopefully it didn't put anyone to sleep, but that was my experience of seeing both cars in the flesh.

Chas,

What is the ideal colour combo/Spec that you're looking for?

In the above example if that's what you're getting at it's irrelevant . As said, the cars weren't comparable ; one was a well maintained car, the other was a neglected dog at first glance.

Honestly? It's what I got . Well maybe not quite but it's pretty close .

Yup, I am the strange one of the group .

Back to CCA, those ratings are owner derived ; I did not realise that until a month ago when someone told me when they queried it with CCA. It may sense however; I saw cars with rot falling onto the floor that had body condition as 3 stars, despite looking tidy on top.

Good to see values going up for M3 CSs. May it continue and I believe, that the prices will increase year on year.

I recently went to visit BMW dealership in Luton and what do you know - they have a lovely, shiny E46 M3 CS on show there. Nice one.

Thanks for the write up, Chas. Sometimes without the details it can be a mystery as to why some cars sell and some cars don't, or the sold price differences as on advert alone they can sometimes look so similar.

Does anyone know the last manual CS was sold that we are aware of and what the details were?

Silver Grey one looks smart and underpriced any in decent condition according to the profile.

122k and I think I'm the fifth owner. I bought on condition and history rather than mileage. Check my members ride thread for more details

I'd be happy with that deal.

As I said earlier the ratings are owner defined, not by CCA, something which I am quite uneasy over really! I've seen cars there previously which did not convey the ratings at all!

It shows one thing however. Some people push their luck with how their car is seen or others don't judge them well enough. With the two CSs I suspect it was a bit of both.

My classic with cracking paint on the wing, and a tatty interior got 87 points! It barely ran when I left. But of course, it's not why I bought it .
