Default Headunits

Hi all,

Looking at replacing the HU in my car as itís got a few dead pixels and looks out of date.

Going to go for one of the new units rather than replacing the screen.

From what Iíve seen there is an alpine unit that works well (ilx-700) and also a sony one (ax-100).

Has anyone got any recommendations otherwise? Only thing Iím really fussed about is apple car play, everything else is just a nice to have.

Hi,

The Alpine iLX-700 in an E46 looks like this;

No need to modify/cut the airbox/pipes and fit's flush as it's shallow depth.

Currently, all the other reputable brand Apple Carplay units don't have as good smooth looks when fitted.

The iLX-702E46 is the 2nd generation Alpine unit and costs quite a bit more.

The Sony AX-100 doesn't look as nice when fitted and is not shallow depth so needs more time/effort/money spent on fitting it.

I don't think there's any other prestige brand shallow depth head units with Apple CarPlay, I daresay in the future there will be !

Cheers, Dennis!

Ok, so as I thought from some research, looks like itís the ilx-700 Iíll be going for.

Next question is what cables do I need to purchase to fit it and get the steering controls working. Same goes for the plastic bezel and any other mounting hardware that required.

If someoneís got a link to a diy install or similar that would be great

Quote:
If you add some options to your Avin avant 3 = $699.99 - $50 = $649.99, unit like DAB+ = $59.99, Apple Carplay/Android Auto = $99.99, IGO GPS = $49.99 that's an amount of $859.96 (€731.85) it nearly cost as much as the
Alpine who has build in DAB+ receiver and Apple Carplay and Android Auto and cost 899,00 €

The price difference between the two units is 167.15 Euro, so not that much.

Alpine Europe told me they wanted to keep the radio low on price because the radio could be more expensive than that the car worth is because of the age.

So personally, i did a long time thinking about the Avin avant 3 and the Alpine iLX-702E46 or even the Halo 9.

Every radio has his pro's and con's, Avin is to expensive for what it is, not to mention those bugs it hase.

I know ExCop530dT, that the alpine is top notch on sound quality and quality in general, but the alpine don't meet my needs like MirrorLink, seperate micro SD card for music or video, a higher screen resolution (specialy by the halo 9 were you can see the pixels) and would to have a stand alone gps modul, you have to connect your phone all the time or may not forget him at home, or if the phone breaks down or worse, get stolen, you can not use the Carplay or android auto to navigate.

Now i have buyed a 9 inch screen from Android Auto Shop for €329.97 with a inbuilt DSP hardware and is rooted, some guy's from XDA helping to optimize the software.

It took some time when i got it from Hongkong.

I modified it with a cooling fan to keep the PX5 cool, and it was a suprise that the unit is much smaller than the one with a cd slot, so there is much more room behind the radio, i din't install it yet because i got no time and i have a knee problem.

The good thing is that i still can use my DAB+ monkey board and my Sygic software with the sharkfin DAB+ and gps antenna mounted on my roof.

If i installed the unit and tested, i will post my findings, it could be good, it could be bad.

For me, the avin 3 is the only head unit (including the avin 2) Iíve seen that looks stock enough that Iím willing to install it... making it the only option other than stock (which I ran for 15 years for the same reason).

A bunch of people are rooting it, though, if rooted android is an experience youíre looking for.

Canít argue itís not pricier!

I have to say, I didn't care at all about CarPlay till I started using it on the Avin. It's pretty great.

Can't wait for iOS12, and Waze on CarPlay!

Hi,

Dendeeze - 'Hopefully' whichever Chinese unit you have will work well long term and consistently, so I wish you good luck on that. Also good luck in feeling better with your knee!

Obioban - I know you're USA based, so as I've mentioned previously, the USA get's excellent pricing on pretty much all 'consumer level' or retail products compared to the UK and most other countries in the world for the 'exact' same product. The Avin brand is USA based and anyone importing one over here will pay a considerable amount more in equivalence than a US based customer like yourself, even when the exchange rates are more in favour to the UK. Given that the Avin 3 has issues and problems, just as all the cheap chinese units most likely and potentially have, then it's only a tiny proportion of UK based enthusiasts who'll buy one.

eoghan - Do you have a build thread or a specific thread with pictures of your iLX702?

Lastly, Kenwood have just released their DMX7018DABS shallow depth unit with Apple CarPlay and Android - http://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk...m/DMX7018DABS/. Pricing is around the £400 level.

Cheers, Dennis!

I actually used my Avin to eliminate every factory stereo module (since they're all redundant to the Avin) and the factory stereo harness (just plugged the speakers directly into the Avin and used it's internal amp.

Don't know if you'll have to be an M3forum.net member for this to load, as the pics are hosted there...

Quote:
Other than seats (and airbag-- waiting to make sure the steering wheel is straight to put that in), the car is finally back together. I'll be putting at least the driver seat in today or tomorrow.

This project spiraled WAY out of control. As in, I spent 100+ hours on this. I'm not going to say I'm glad I did it (sooooo much work), but I am going to say I'm super excited for the results!

In total, the project consisted of...
-remove all factory stereo modules, the stereo wiring harness, and all factory stereo mount brackets. Replace with Avin (which has all the stock module functionality built in) and make a new (tiny) wiring harness for the speakers, plugging them directly into the Avin
-do the above without altering the factory chassis harness at all. I did this entirely, 100% with the Avin only connecting to the chassis with the factory 7 pin chassis to stereo harness plug behind the dash. My goal here was to not have the chassis electronics be compromised in any way. This harness has everything you need for the Avin-- ibus, interior light dimming, ignition power, antenna power
-fuse all aftermarket electronic systems through new fuses in the factory fuse box. No vampire clips or inline fuses exist on my car any longer
-integrate aftermarket system functionality to factory buttons
-wrap all wiring bundles (OE and aftermarket) in OEM fabric tape, secure all wiring to the chassis with OE mounting hardware.
-relocate battery to the "drug bin" The idea here was that the 5.7 lithium polymer battery I'm running isn't meaningfully contributing to weight distribution, but the 8 lb battery cable that runs from the rear of the car to the front is making it heavier.
-relocate and downsize the washer tank to the drug bin. This car is no longer a DD, and never sees winter use, so I don't need anything like a full size washer tank... but I also don't want none, in a pinch. So, I have a ~1 pint tank in the drug bin now, as well. With the stock tank being in the front bumper, this should restore some of the 50/50 lost from not having a heavy battery in the trunk. It'll also make it easier to add brake ducting down the road.

And, add a ton of functionality via the Avin Avant 3, which is the first head unit that's look stock enough that I was comfortable running it in my car:
-CarPlay
-Waze
-YaV1 to add GPS filtering to the V1
-Extra gauges and code pulling on the fly via Torque

Some pics...

New, Harmon Kardon branding free, speaker covers

Increased trunk space carpeting (no door/rack for the CD changer/nav)

What's behind that carpeting now

Vs before (not my car)

New battery location, with the washer tank visible (pump not installed yet)

And in the area where the battery used to be installed, it turns out BMW makes a deeper storage bin! Key pictured for scale.

Some integrated bit….

Front fog light button is now brake light kills (cluster indicator still reminds me when this is on, stock functionality no longer required because I’ll be doing a CSL bumper)

Rear fog light button kills all reverse brake lights (with cluster indicator to remind me when this is on)

e39 high intensity wash button is wired up to activate M track mode (currently requires CSL/ZCP MK60 unit)

HK button is now Laser jammer power (retains memory of on/off from last drive, and power status light)

And the interior all back together, minus seats/airbag. Probably looks like nothing to most of you, but having been looking at chassis and wiring for the last couple months, this is like magic to me

I'm pretty pleased with the new, black gauge faces, too!

Huge thanks to Terra for dealing with my stream of conscious questions/thoughts/ramblings as I did this project

I have the Sony AX-100. It's one of a few headunits that can do both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

I use CarPlay myself and it is great! It's pretty quick in how it works too!

No modification of the heater box is required for this headunit either and it's to my knowledge one of a few 'big brand' HUs that retains a volume knob:

Just to say Sony have launched xav-ax5000 android and CarPlay with shallow depth so should fit e46 without mods.

Hi,

The Sony XAV-AX5000 is a USA release and for that market. The differences will be in the Tuner stage where it's tuning step frequencies will be different to UK step tuning and will be geared for those who have Sirius/XM requirements - so no UK DABS+ support.

Hopefully, more good shallow depth units to come from all the high quality brands!

Cheers, Dennis!
