Default Is the Yamaha R6 a horrible first bike?

A lad in the office recently bought his first bike, a Honda CBR125.

Prior to this, we were all helping him, looking at what was on offer etc.

Gotta say, some of the R6's I saw looked tasty... here's a great review on the 05 R6 - is the review on point?

Heard this debate a lot, with differing viewpoints. The CBR125 will teach roadcraft and also how a bike leans (the bit inexperienced riders struggle with the most).
The only thing a 125 never can recreate is acceleration, speed and entering a corner subsequently too fast.
The sensible would say build up the cc and capabilities of the bike as yours grow, others are able to resist the twist of the wistful and can learn on a more cutting edge bike.
The R6 is fast and a true sports bike with an uncompromising riding position too. Run rings around most 1000cc bikes in the right hands.
All depends on the skill of the rider.

I went rs125 to r6. Was fine. Know when to hold back and ul get used to stuff quite fast. Not a bad move talking from experience

I went from a 125 to a 650. Wish I'd gone straight for the one thou. If it wasn't for insurance I would have done. Got my name down for a new Fireblade in March now. May even chose a Ducati. But it will be a litre either way.

That could be down to what u prefer Honda power of dreams or Suzuki ride the wheels of change or something like that lol

imho on the 125 you take bigger risks, way back when I had a 125 because of the lack of power I'd do some silly overtakes......I'd have the momentum and think " **** it ".......

But on the bigger bikes you didn't need to take them risks, you've got the power to overtake easily. You can hold off knowing that once round the corner you can easily get by.

They're all good bikes nowadays. Even an early 5eb R6 is barrels of fun, any litre bikes from 2003 onwards are great.....the early R1 is good but not a patch on the 5PW but that's just from my own experience.

I think the best bike you can get for the money is a K1/2 GSXR thou,superb bikes. One of my favs is the K3/4 thou's, they can be had for under 3k, mine was a little special though with tasteful mods making it a superb bike.

Although if I were getting a thou I'd spend an extra 1000 and get a GSXR 1000K5/K6, proper fast bike for the money

I had an R6 as my first bike, and despite being pretty sensible, had two iffy moments.

First - was following a car a little too closely and they suddenly braked - cue impromptu stoppie 3 days into my riding career. Superbike brakes are ferocious.

Second - ran into a roundabout too hot, panicked, stood the bike up, wound up crosssing three lanes. Luckily there was no other traffic but its easy done when your a new rider.

Superb bikes though and sound angry with a race can.

I now have a blade and if it had been my first bike, id probably currently be in a lot of pain. You cant comprehend how fast they are, and id never have a thousand as a first bike.

Anyone that thinks a race replica bike is suitable for a first bike is insane. People say you can be careful. But the thing is the most common bike accident is one not involving another vehicle. Meaning the rider has lost control. The main reason this happens is because the rider has entered a turn at a speed to fast for him to handle. Now I can tell you that the chance of this occurring on a 1000cc bike compared to a 125/250 is MUCH greater.

PS: I started on a 600cc and can tell you that I too did that same thing on a big roundabout. Thank god there were no cars on it as I was forced to abandon the turn and go the wrong way round.

Lesson learnt from that day.

my first bike was r1 at 16 , my dad bought it cheap in Germany so i could not say no It took me few months until i could you use full power. Sadly at that age you don't think , after 7 months been caught doing 260km/h ,then sold the bike to pay the fine

Nearly 20 years ago, I had the R6s predecessor, the YZF600 as a first bike. I raced around on it everywhere, scared myself on most rideouts through entering corners too quickly. I then crashed it on a track day 6 months later. It was brilliant, thoroughly exciting.

I then bought an SV650s and learnt how to corner properly.

I learned on a sv650 with a 33bhp restrictor. Removed it after a year and it was like a new bike again.

I think that helped me get use to how a bike rides and learned to corner properly.

Moved to zx6r and blade after that.

I think as a first bike the r6 is to fast.

Learn to corner properly on a smaller bike first! Teaches you a lot! Full power 2 strokes are great fun! I recently had to ride a YZF 125 (own a R1) and actually had a lot of fun on it and it reminded me of several things I had forgotten. Even with 10x less hp!

I had a GSXR600 as my first bike, clocking up 6000 miles in my first year in the saddle, only had only really hairy moment. But I didn't pass my test until I was 24, so had been driving 7 years so already had road sense (well as much as I was going to have).
My parents were against me having a bike at a young age, and looking back, I totally agree. Young, dumb and full of cum, not a good combination...

My first bike was a Daytona 675. Easy smooth bike to ride with plenty of grunt out the corners, but not what some people call a 'starter bike'.

I did not go down the 125cc bike route. What is the point of getting a bike you don't like because people say it's a good 'starter bike'?

I had a go on a 600 Bandit for the day and thought it was soulless compared to my triple engined Daytona.

My first bike was a cbr400rr nc29. Everyone forgets about the 400s.from the late 80s early 90s. Mind you the prices of these old bikes have sky rocketed recently.
