Default Traction

Hi Guys,

I've had my car a few months now and I love the car, coming from an E46 M3. If I had one criticism of the car, it would be that the traction seems poor, at least compared to the E46.

I know the car has more torque, so obviously there is that to factor in. That being said, I don't feel the car is able to get the power down in the corners, and sometimes the traction will come on in a staight line when changing into 4th, and occasionally 5th!

The tyres that came with the car are sport contact 3's, I have always run michelin's previously (super sports on the E46) and I know there is a 4s now which is supposed to be even better.

What are people experiences and thoughts? Anyone else running SC3's (or any other tyres) having the same expereince?

I’m on contis and have no problems at all with traction , very rarely have any slip at all . Coming from an m4 when traction was forever interrupting it’s a refreshing change but understand how different from an 46 it is

Mine came with MPSS. I have managed to get the traction light to come on in a straight line on a dry day, but that was foot flat on the floor in 2nd as the booOOOST! came in.

I have been running conti 3 but there just about gone now on the rear with 16000 approaching. I’m replacing them with Yokohama v105 so it will be interesting to see the difference.

In response to the original posters question they do loose traction under hard acceleration even when changing from 3rd to 4th when giving it the beans in the dry. In the wet the tail goes everywhere now under load which is actually quite amusing.

I’m just wondering if anybody does a few doughnuts for a laugh prior to a rear tyre change

Nearly forgot to mention that I’ve gone for 275 replacements. The tyres that should have been fitted to the car in the first place.

Yep let us know what you think of the Yoko's. What are the sidewalls like on the v105?

Has anyone tried the AD08 R's on these cars?

Will do. One of the reasons I got them is because the sidewalls are supposed to be rock solid. I was considering uniroyal rainsport 3 but the reviews said the sidewalls were like sponge.

Driving cars fitted with runflats for long periods appears to have some side-effects given how low-profile all these tyres are...

If you have loads of traction issues it's worth getting the geo checked by someone who knows their stuff. Powerful RWD cars need accurate rear geo to put the power down.

The sport contacts aren't up to the job mate (except the new SC6 which I have on my 19s and are pretty good).

I had the SC3's n my E92 M3 when I first bought it and I was driving home on a warm night WOT 2nd gear in MDM and the back end stepped out on me while I was going in a straight line!

Only with clear sight-lines - unless you're wedded to the idea of getting into top gear as early as possible and staying there...

305/30/20 on my f80,

on the 1m i ran 295/30/19 without issues
