Default Hey Guys - Calum (hopefully about to buy)

Hey All,

I'm Calum, from Nottingham. Hope everyone is doing well.

Been a lurker on here for a while... figured an account was due! Currently have a E46 330Ci vert, but ready to do the upgrade!

I've looked at 4 E46 M3s so far, all convertibles as I can't get enough of driving around with the roof down! Haven't driven an SMG yet, got a few later this week / weekend to give a go. I know preemptive before having driven one, but think I want an SMG - the little kid in me wants the flappy paddles! Lots of warnings in various forums about the SMG and possible problems, but for now I'm trying to take them with a pinch of salt as people rarely tend to post "all OK with my SMG posts" If you're opinions are otherwise please do let me know!

One last thing - before I had driven an M3, I had a pretty good idea that it would be a very different car from my 330Ci.... but I was blown away by how much of a different experience it is, even just cruising around. I love my 330, so wasn't wanting for something completely different, but was very pleasantly surprised at how the M3s are simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar!

Cheers,
Calum

Welcome to the forum Calum

Good luck on your search. I've had both manual and SMG M3's and I love them both. For me the CSL software update is essential. Whether it's been done already on the car you buy or you get it done yourself (forum member Cossie1 is your man for this, he done mine). It is honestly chalk and cheese for the driving experience!

A up mate welcome. Good luck with your search. I’ve been on here a while and there’s a good few Midlands/Notts lads who meet fairly regularly so good luck with your search and hopefully catch you around. Ps the smg thing imo has not been blown out of proportion. There is an almost daily new thread on here about some poor sod having theirs break. Google smg problems. More results than porn!

Thanks for the welcome and replies

Here's a pic of my current:

And here is a slightly dirtier pic on my drive...

And yes.. There is my new one behind it (happy chappy). I drove an SMG Friday evening and fell in love! Will grab some proper pics when I can. Will also be putting my 330ci on autotrader in the next few days if anyone is interested?

Unfortunately made the slightly silly decision of driving down to Ramsgate the evening I picked it up. SMG started to have issues on the Sunday on the way back to Nottingham, managed to limp it home.... so its at BMWMAN currently!

Yep ADL, definitely not blown out of proportion! Hopefully catch you around!

Matt, cheers for the advice, lets get the SMG working first! I like the idea of the downshift blip without throttle. Although I didn't get to drive for long before things started to go adrift, I found the downshifting and engine breaking to be quite severe. Although lets be honest, with only a few hours driving, that may have just been my inexperience.

Cheers

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with the SMG gearbox already. Hopefully you get it sorted soon

Cheers, planing a road trip to south of France with a few friends end of July - so sooner rather than later to be honest!

Thanks for the pics, old and new both look good, didn't expect you to find one so quickly! Sorry to hear you're having problems, but hopefully can be sorted soon

Thanks, I'm sure it'll be fine - the garage its with seem to really know what they're doing! Very glad I budgeted for "initial fixes".

Neither did I, had little intention of getting the one that I did before I saw it... just goes to show how much decent pictures make a difference!
