Default Advice please, normal M3 water temp?

Hi all,

My car does something which I don't even know if it's normal or not.

On hot weather like today (25+ celcious) when going uphill and with the aircon on, the water temp goes to almost the 2nd white dot so in total 3/4 of the way on the dial.

Is this normal or is it supposed to always stay bang on the middle?

What happens to track cars?

I had this last summer too so I have replaced everything on the cooling system (aircon condenser, water radiator, aux fan clutch, waterpump and thermostat) but still got this today! The only thing I have not replaced is the aircon fan at the front.

Switching the aircon off helps a lot but does not eliminate the problem completely and this happens mostly when I'm going uphill whether i'm doing 70 or 30 mph and especially if I push the engine i.e. try to accelerate to overtake or simply keep it in 6th gear on a motorway.

Please help?...

Mine has got that hot when worked a bit harder, I asked my indy about it and he said it's normal. I was on a track day though !

Think it's that time of year when that needle is going to be a bit more active. It was indicating 31 degrees outside and I got stuck in horrific traffic in Peterborough, about half an hour of stop start. Needle actually touched the red zone. Didn't help that the wife was whinging it was too hot with the roof down so put the air con on. Within 2 minutes of moving again it went back down to just left of middle like normal. Seems these engines are very reliant on air flow!

I've never seen the temp gauge go over the end dot. Mainly just above first dot on normal days but on really hot days dead centre.

Do check that your electric fan runs when the air conditioning is switched on. Water ingress into that fan module attached go the fan motor is common, and the connections to the fan motor rot away

Mine doesn't move from just under half, even today with A/C flat out. Water temp between 87-90 according to intravee.

I see... Mine never goes past the 2nd white dot, actually never even touches it but I was used to previous bmws (non m3s) never moving but the center.

Yup all fans work as they should, the aircon fan kicks in when tha ac is switched on and I can hear it with the roof down and music off.

It's just unnerving when it happens and stresses the **** out of me...

What antifreeze is in there and what ratio is it mixed with water?

Tap water or distilled?

Mine went a knats cock past the middle today while stuck in traffic with aircon on and registering 33 degrees.

Caught my attention because I've never seen it go beyond just under the middle before.

It was so hot that we couldn't pick up my sons metal fidget spinner that he'd left on the centre armrest (no exaggeration, it was literally too hot to touch). On that basis I chose not to worry about the temp reading high. Best to wait for a cooler day and see what the gauge does then, however I don't think it should be reading anywhere near the upper dot.

Maz I have no idea, whatever the indy used last time it was done. I was thinking of adding some water wetter in there...

No, on cooler days it never moves either however I plan to drive to Greece again this summer and the temperature there might even hit 40c outside early August so if it's already acting up at 25 imagine what will happen then. Last year it even did this on the motorway on the tiniest of gradient and we had to turn the ac off. It was a nightmare...

As we're on the subject, where should the coolant level stick be when you open it up? I've just had the head gasket done and was told to check the coolant level periodically. At the moment (engine is still warm so I did get a hiss of pressure release when I unscrewed the cap) the top of the stick is about 5mm below the filler cap. I'll have a look again in the morning when it's cold, the indy said when it's cold it should be level with or only slightly below the filler cap... Is that correct? When the engine is hot would the stick be slightly below as mine is?

I did my HG year too and the coolant is always pretty much all the way up where it should be. So the plastic bit almost touches the cover.

Water pump and thermostat might need changing if the temps are going to high.

Not looked at the m3 water pump but have heard of others where the plastic fins break on the pump which hinders the pump performance and water flow

there is a diagram on the expansion bottle to describe the intended level for the stick.

Hot weather it will run warmer. Mine hasn't gone past the middle yet but in the book it does say it can go up to the 2nd dot when its hot.

It will run hotter going uphill as there is increased load on the engine just like going downhill and you see the temp drop.

That does put me at ease a bit to be honest yes. I didn't get a manual (or any paperwork! :@ ) with my car but I have found one a couple months ago but didn't read it.

I should try my best to ignore it then so long as it doesn't go past the 2nd white dot...

Thank you all for the help I appreciate it!
