So its a nice day , thought i would get some fuel and head out for a ride.

Within 3 miles, temp gauge going well over half and then up in to red. ( but before red light illumination)

This was gentle driving with traffic.

AC was on full whack ( 30 degrees C here today outside)

My Aux van is spinning really fast (you can hear it)

Viscous fan on engine is turning plenty but not really vroooming or picking up even faster, and it can be stopped by hand/newspaper.

Your thoughts please? I haven't opened radiator tank yet as way to hot.
Managed to stop the car wait for it to cool and got it home quick, i now feel rather looking at it. Ive only had it two months.

My temperature usually goes up to the middle of the gauge quite quickly from cold, then I see the temperature drop momentarily when the thermostat opens. Sounds like your thermostat didn't open.

The aux fan would be running because the air conditioning was on, rather than because the temperature of the water in the rest of the system had triggered it (particularly in the bottom hose of the radiator, where the thermoswitch is).

If it needs a new thermostat, it isn't a bad job to change, all easy to access at the front, top of the engine.

You viscous fan is knackered you shouldn't be able to stop it with a news paper. It's not strong enough. Had the same a few years ago.

My temp gauge now sits in the middle and the fan keeps cutting in? Any ideas? (It's a new thing)

Not sure have you consulted Mystic Meg? You could do worse than check your viscous fan. Easy to do you get it up too temp and switch off the engine and you shouldn't be able to turn the fan by hand or get a rolled up newspaper and see if you can stop the fan with the engine at tickover and up to temp like the op said. If you can the viscous clutch is worn out and needs replacing.

Had the same thing happen on my five pulled up aircon fan on full whack and I'd never heard it come on before (aicon itself was off at the time) and my temp started to creep over halfway. Turned it off and got a newspaper, fired it up again and could easily stop the fan turning at tickover. Replaced that along with waterpump and stat at the same time and its been fine ever since. Also after I replaced it when the car is 1st switched on the viscous fan is engaged and you can hear it for the first minute or so or operation which you never could with the one I removed.

That's normal isn't it? The fan is cutting in to maintain your gauge in the middle.

It's in the garage now, first view water pump is screwed. Can even rattle the viscous clutch attached to pulley.

My aircon fans been kicking in with the heat the last few days and I've never heard the viscous engage at low speeds in traffic so going to test mine with the newspaper method when I get home think it may be getting weak.

Let us know how you get on with yours.
