Default Ifh003 error

I've been using a laptop with preloaded diagnostic software for a few years. The last time i used it was probably about 18 months ago when it worked fine.

The past week i have tried to use it again and I keep getting the following error message.

IFH003 data transmission to interface disturbed.

BMW flasher cannot connect to the car either. I've tried all the different usb ports on the laptop. Cannot understand how it used to work fine and now does not.

Any ideas from anyone? Thanks.

BTW laptop is on windows xp and the car is 2005 E46 M3.

Check the cable is detected in device manager correctly and COM ports align

Maybe an old FTDIgate issue (google how to identify and fix)

All the usb ports are recognised but none of them are as COM1. Should i change one of them in device manager to be recognised as com1?

When your cable is plugged in it should show up. You aren't answering what was asked.

When i connect the cable to laptop it shows up in Ports (COM &LPT) as 'USB serial port (com 11)' and in Universal Serial Bus controllers as 'USB Serial Converter'
