how many litres does it take and which brand is everyone using ?
165+v just for oil at BMW

Use the Bmw recommended castrol 10w60 edge oil. Ecp often have good deals on it.

9 litres should be enough

Mine took bang on 9 litres last time I changed it. Bought from ECP for 80.

do BMW take oil if i supply it or not cause their price is double is it fully synthetic or any 1 use mobil1

Not sure if still needed but as stated previously, s65's take circa 8.8-9litres. This oil is 10w 60 and is fully synthetic. My local BMW dealer alllowed me to provide the oil as they changed from castrol edge to shell oil. I told them i wanted to use the oil that the car came from the the factory with so they were cool. I'd go with castrol edge or top of the line mobil is good also.

Mine took 8l last time I changed it. Castol Edge 10W60 as people have said. Not too difficult to change yourself, this is what I did last time when I got quotes of 270! which is about 200 labour

Is there any real difference between the current BMWM oil, and the factory castrol (i.e. is the switch at dealers a cost saving exercise instead of what's "best" for preserving the longevity of the engine).

Both are BMW approved.

My friend services mine but I get my oil from BMW and they will discount it if you ask. See below what I posted to another thread.

if you ask for price match Sytners and Stratone both do 6 litres of the Shell M Turbo 10-60w oil and filter for around 70. I've done this for my last few services. Good Oil as well I had mine tested at over 10,000 miles and it was still in good shape and a 10-50w at that mileage.

Think I got it for 68 all in last time in Nottingham

I also got them to price match me discs recently inline with Sytners Coventry ebay pricing from 225 per side to 250 all in for both. You have to ask. I'd imagine they'd do 9 litres and filter for under a ton which wouldn't be bad.

Opie (forum sponsor) did 10 litres of Castrol with discount 88 delivered a month or so ago, this was with a 15% discount, i noticed they are doing a 20% discount in April.

I did a little research into why BMW changed from Castrol to Shell as their lubricants
supplier. It appears its because BMW were interested in the Gas to Liquid technology unique to Shell.
This produces a fully synthetic lubricating oil called an iso-paraffin which has very similar properties to
Poly Alpha Olefin synthetic except it has worse cold performance but superior in long term ie stays in grade longer.
Its the last that BMW appear to be interested in. Apparently the cold performance ie its a bit thick at low temp
can be controlled with extra refining.

Now this is my take on it but as Im not a petrochemist I could be wrong so would welcome any further info.

When I downloaded the spec sheet on Opie Oils website for both Castrol Edge 10W60 (TWS/FST) and Shell Helix 10W60 "Ultra Racing" I found that the kinematic viscosity at 100deg (working temp) and the Density of the oil were pretty much indentical however the viscosity of the Shell at 40deg was lower. Consider that the viscosity decrreases as the oil get to working temp so in theory the Shell is better while your engine is wari g up.

Only issue is the current PDF on the site is dated Oct 2007. I've found a spec sheet from Shell Australia dated 2013 which states the same values however I've also found another shell data sheet dated 2014 (looks to be Turkey/EU market) which list values more similar to the Castrol 10W60.

Also shell don't state the viscosity index so can't compare the stability vs the Castrol.

The Fuchs Titan "Race pro" 10W 60 is even better at 40deg but compromises at working temp very slightly compared to the shell/castrol (however has a higher viscosity index).

I've asked Opie to clarify/update the shell spec sheet for our region but no response yet. I guess they're all pretty similar but would be nice to know which is the correct value for the Shell @40deg considering our engines seem to be pretty sensitive to oil temp
