Clearly I am, I've pulled engine and box complete and fitted like that, bonnet not removed, with a 125 eBay engine crane.
People moan about the tilt required but if you just jack up the rear of the car it is not an issue.

No refitting bumper, lights, front panel or alignment issues or having to move the wiring.

Why do more than you have too when all that is required is jacking the rear?

not for me

On the vectra I had the car high
Had the engine and box on the subframe resting on the crane legs
The crane was the trolley to slide them under the car
Then hooked up the crane part when in position to lift them off the legs and into the shell in one
This may be a handy concept for you doing a side by side swap

Mine's about a foot off the floor all round at the moment, but I'll remember this for the 328i.

Not sure if you've bought a shell already but I've just seen an m3 estoril convertible shell for sale on eBay for 450. No idea on condition but maybe worth checking out. Will be a shame to reshell into a standard E36 imo as it'll never be a genuine M3 again but that's just my opinion ha.

You do know there is a service position on the bonnet which opens it a lot higher ( almost vertical ) making working under there and presumably removing an engine a lot easier?

I've had e36s for about ten years and only discovered it 6 months ago!

I assume in the factory they already had the engine and gearbox on the front subframe and mounting point and jacked the whole lot up under the car.

Guess the height needed would make that a bit tricky for most people at home.

I have done similar to the above on fwd cars, drop the engine under with the crane, then use the crane to lift the front of the car before sliding the engine out the side under the arch.
