Default '08 M3 - "Rattly" engine under acceleration (plus fault warnings)

Hi folks,

For the last two months I've been loving every moment of my E92 M3, but sadly a month ago my daily driver (a Citroen C2 Code) packed up, and I've been driving the M3 to work and such while the C2 is in the garage.

On Saturday, when the sun was out, I decided to go for a... gentle drive... Obviously let it hit temperature and settle in before pinning it (I'm not a savage), and things were wonderful. Theeeen they weren't. On the way back home, the engine warning light came on, and the car went into limp home mode. The fault read "Engine fault: reduced power". Gah.

Now previously the car had a fault with the actuators, but these were repaired by Rebuild.org, so shouldn't be causing issues (plus they usually throw up other warnings too). Additionally, after turning the engine off for about half an hour, things seemed fine. No more fault light.

However, I then noticed on Sunday (and this morning) that starting from cold, the engine makes a very pronounced rattling. I recorded the sounds on my phone (see below), and they seemed to disperse when the car warmed up. However, just now, I drove into town to pick up my sunglasses from Citroen (left them in the door sill like a mug), and I noticed that under acceleration, the engine was "rattling" like in the videos. I suppose I would liken it to the sound of a Spitfire, if the Spitfire were only 12 inches long.

Video 1: Discovered after startup so only caught the tail end of the noise.


Video 2: Starting up from cold, rattle more pronounced.


Additionally, the car has sometimes thrown up errors like "rear brake light failure" and "daytime light failure" or something similar, but upon inspection all of my light are working fine. Likely just the car becoming senile?

Has anyone had any similar experiences? Advice on what could be causing it?

And does anyone have any recommendations for reliable garages in the Wiltshire area? It's got an aftermarket warranty but apparently they can be a tad useless and get their independent engineers to claim it's wear and tear, no matter what the issue is...

Sooooo things got a lot worse today.

I did my walkaround as promised:



And as I was driving to BMW to ask how much they were going to rip me off (£118/hr labour!), the car went into limp home mode again, and this time it was accompanied by the entire car shaking violently. I pulled over (improperly used a bus lane to get off the road so now I've got to write an email to the Council asking for forgiveness) and filmed it but it's not clear on the video at all. Sod's law then dictated that when I rocked up to BMW to get a service bloke in to look at it, the car wasn't misbehaving. Engine warning light is still on but no error messages this time, and no reduced power. Drove home fine but with the warning on. PLUS the sodding daytime running lights have broken too.

I swear I'm cursed.

Non of the video's work for me...

Rattling is unusual for the S65...... Are you sure its not a low end knock ?

Look up big end noise and see if it resembles the noise you car is making..

The videos will hopefully be displayed now.

It's hard to tell. On one hand it sounds like your flywheel is loose. On another hand it sounds like an exhaust blow. It's always awkward diagnosing the car over a video but a walkaround with the bonnet up would give more clues.

Thanks for the fix! I've edited the main post, didn't know how to use the 'Tube links properly.

I'll do a walkaround tomorrow; I have a hire car for a meeting so can't get to mine just at the moment. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try and get one of it being driven too if I can get a colleague to lend a hand. Might also help!

£118 sounds like a bargain I was quoted £162 for the first hour WTF!!
Doesn’t any one know a friendly technician on here

I'm taking it to a BMW specialist in Wiltshire tomorrow morning for them to have a quick look - I imagine they won't charge £118/hr and that I can probably convince them to break something so it can be covered by my warranty if it's from wear and tear XD

It so hard to say off video's.....

But it does seem to have a knock when you get into the engine bay...

Being honest,i dont think i would drive that car...it needs checking beforehand.

I took it to a specialist in town who is charging a much lower rate of labour (thank the V8 for indy specialists) and has had a quick look at it. He reckons it's the exhaust manifold having either come loose, or cracked. It's booked in for Monday.

Exhaust makes sense given the issues I've had, and the trembling was confirmed to be the engine misfiring, so it should hopefully be a reasonably cheap fix (few hundred quid versus closer to a grand getting it done at BMW). Plus he thinks he can get the warranty company to agree to cover the cost even if it's wear and tear. Noice.

I'll let you all know how it goes once it's done! Thanks for your help folks.

I was going to say. If it was rod bearings they would be knocking under load with a definitive rattling tap.

I'm tempted to say exhaust blow. There is only so much you can make out from videos, but it is slightly clearer in that video.

Hi all, thanks again for the helpful comments/suggestions.

The garage have told me it's a gasket on the exhaust - it had completely disintegrated, causing a leak in the exhaust and throwing off the sensors, making them think it was running lean. That explains the misfire too.

All in all, cost for the full works is just over £200 inc. labour and VAT - significantly less than what BMW would have wanted.

I should be getting the car back tomorrow, so I'll do a final update after that if things are back to normal!
