Ian, just looking at the photos again, the teeth on the gears look to be okay and not broken, so what is the issue with them?

Thanks Tony

That's what I suggested. Quickly patent it and you'd have an awesome market here and worldwide!

As I've volunteered to test the prototype, does that make me some sort of Walter Rohrl?

Looks like a nice piece of engineering. Can only imagine the time and thought that went into the design and build process. Awesome work!

It's difficult to see on the photos but I know from other threads that the teeth don't break, they wear or thin out. This excessive wear introduces a backlash (excessive play) into the system that the sensitive electronics can't handle hence the warnings.

Thanks for the explanation all makes sense now. What are the years affected or is all e90,e92,e93?

All years, all models I'm afraid.

They are off the shelf actuators manufactured by VDO-Siemens and they are (as far as I know) exactly the same today as they were in 2007 so the issue remains.

I nabbed this photo from another forum. It clearly shows the wear on the teeth.

Small pinion gear

Output gear as it should look

Output gear showing the worn portion

71k and i'm still on original Accutators !!

its the only reason im carring on the BMW Extended warranty at comprehensive level .... as soon as they pop and get replaced i`ll lower the level ...

my VIN is only a few away from yours Ian ... gulp !

Its a shame the Accuators are buried deep in the "V" ... else a clean up and inspection would be an annual task.

Sorry about the late update but I've only just got round to fitting these. I did both banks on Monday and it's running perfectly.

The only problem I have is a few grazes. It's very tight under the intake.

Top job mate. Maybe do what Peter did with the diesel swirl flaps if you have time?

Are these being made now? If there is a cheaper fix than replacing the entire unit sounds very good
