You can change many things about a car, but not the mileage ( legally at least). So you can spend money sorting out "issues", but not lower the miles - lower miles are desirable to more people at resale time.

Give me the choice of two "similar" cars in terms of spec and maintenance but one at 150k miles and one at 50k and I wouldnt consider the high miler, regardless of cost or feel.

+1 nobody wants an old, miled up car, old and low miles perhaps.

Milage is a funny one. I'd consider where it might be when you intend on selling. For instance if you buy one at 80k and intend to put 20k on it well that psychologically for most people is a point where the car will be worth less.

Also super low milage cars I have owned I have been reluctant to put miles on which ultimately hinders your enjoyment of the car.

You buy it to drive it after all.

Yeah I want to use as a daily driver but not for business trips , so maybe 7k miles pa .
Is a 2006 SMG coupe black on black 24k miles no nav worth 20k

No E46 M3 is worth 20k IMO


If you needed one to complete your garage collection, and it was mint and you always wanted one when you were younger and you were never going to drive it cos you have the Panamera or RR Sport for daily duties, then maybe ...but I'd still want nav

I have 2 cars but will always choose to use the M3 wherever possible, and will always take the A and B roads which are ultimately longer mileage but more fun. Forget re-sale values, just get a good one and enjoy it to the max.

While low mileage on an old car always looks good on paper, condition is everything on a 10+ year old car.

Plus, if it got those low miles through lots of short journeys, there's a whole raft of items that will need looking at.

Just because you find a low mileage car doesn't mean you still won't spend money on it.

Found my 1 owner 04 plate with only 42k on the clock , but have spent many 's getting it how I want it.

The truth is we will never know if there motorway miles or short journeys unless your with the previous owner 24/7.

Mileage is mileage and will always affect resale value but if your not selling..who cares!

I have seen E46 m3 with over 240k on the clock..here is another high miler below..

Agree, I bought my 02 plate with 1 former owner and 46k on the clock a few years back. But I knew the age would result in wear and tear items needing replacing. So far I have had the following changed under warranty - rear springs, stereo and rear diff oil leak. And I have replaced the top mounts, RTABs, front track rod ends, bonnet springs, and 2 tyres.

The car is definitely worth more than I paid for it, though its a keeper so not worried about re-sale value...yet!.

But for 20k would seriously consider the E92...

The service history can be telling however as can wear and tear in the interior.. My car did 100k within 5 years. After that the car has seen little use.

Personally I do not look at mileage but I do look at condition. If I was to use the car as an investment or as a monthly plaything I'd get a low miler. Otherwise I just end up looking at the clock getting closer to the inevitable 100,000 mile mark.

Cars were made to be driven.

I was of the opinion that miles dont matter and have bought cars in the past on condition but people care too much about it when you come to sell and performance cars with high miles are notoriously hard to shift.

If its a keeper forever then it doesnt matter, but if you intend to sell it does!

People with high mileage cars say it doesnt matter what the miles are - and it doesnt, but try selling that theory to someone with the reddies who wants to buy!

I have had performance cars for 18 months with 150k on the clock that were 100% reliable.
It took me near 6 months to sell it though.

Lower mileage will generally mean less road rash and less wear and tear on the interior which is a plus but I wouldn't want it to be all stop-start town mileage for obvious reasons.

It's a shame millage has such a resale value on cars. Had cars with both low and high and both drove pretty much the same

I bought a low-miler e46 m3, and changed everything on the car... I wish I had bought a high-miler... New diff, new rims, new battery, new everything... Furthermore the chassis had to be reinforced anyway, the mounts and bushings had to be swapped, the whole suspension as well and the car has to be repainted, viscous fan as well is swapped as a precaution... The interior plastics started bubbling as well, so they need a change... the car is only 60k miles. **** wears over the years, no matter who makes it and how well it is maintained... I even have new seats at this point. The Engine is faultless, but a rebuild is planned for next year anyway... so... I guess it depends... but next time I would go a high-miler and change everything since I changed everything anyway...
