Default SMG Gearbox

Car has been running fine but suddenly seems to take ages to change gear in automatic - not consistent either - any ideas? - someone suggested gearbox oil change?

Do you have the settings lower in automatic mode.
Turn the gearbox up.
If you have done that already then try the usual, salmon relay, do 40mph and pull the paddles back for 5 seconds or something like that.

Don't understand why oil would make any difference to the speed it changes gear.
Although it might not hurt to do a oil change.

Good suggestions.

Pulling the paddles back is the software reset: Doing at least 20mph, knock the stick into neutral and hold both paddles back for a couple of seconds, release and knock the stick back over to drive.

The salmon relay triggers pump operation, so if this is intermittent, there's a chance the actuators aren't operating at full whack ...unusual for it not to throw up a fault light, but for 7 (or whatever they are) it could fix your problem.

It was mainly 1st to 2nd but I did the reset and it seems to have sorted itself out

Our smg is like that, when revs kick 3k+ it changes to 2nd all other changes are fine though

Default SMG II Fault

Hi all, had a fault develop recently on the SMG II. The auto function was going into N whilst decelerating over speed bumps and flashing as it thought about which gear to select. The gearbox telltale light came one and even in manual it didn't seem happy. BMW were delighted to change the relay (for 135!) but weren't able to tell me exactly what the actual problem was. Apparently the fault codes are too generic and the 100 of diagnostic labour charge was inconclusive. It was decided a 35 relay replacement was def worth a shot.

Happen again after 2 drives, weirdly after an hour and a half drive and no problems out of town, then the return no problems at all for an hour of driving until reaching speed bumps back in town; telltale on and a flashing N. Only once this time though with the gearbox not going into gear momentarily, but a concern all the same.

Anyone had any similar experience? BMW suggested a 3.5k job to replace the SMG pump....

Just looking into buying a Vgate iCar 3 wifi or similar OBD reader and hoping someone might have an idea about this. Will try the salmon relay reset whilst driving as well.

Well it's definitely not the pump (assuming it changes up gears ok and otherwise shifts normally)

Poor form from BMW ...as you say, for a diagnostic charge you at least expected them to come up with something better than We'll try a new relay...


Three suspect areas come to mind;

- clutch, and/or fork
- ident springs (though usually symptoms include not being able to change gear at higher revs)
- GearPositionSensor

It's clutching at straws, but if you can't get it to replicate the downshift issue anywhere else, I wonder if it's something about the momentum over the speed bump that's causing an early onset of GPS failure. The codes certainly aren't generic - this one will be something about shift path

Thanks for the reply Rick, that's really useful. The car had a new clutch last year after a failure, so it's less likely to be the clutch/fork, or if it is, it is related to the work done - the car has done next to no miles since! Maybe the gps.

Hopefully an OBD reader will help me to understand more about it.

Never fit a new unit for 3.5k.

For the E46 you can get just the motor for a lot less or have your own one rebuilt.

Last should be less than hundred.

Interesting thread resurrection


Sometimes you have no choice but to replace the pump. Swapping or rebuilding the motor is like the old advice to swap the salmon relay - 10% of the time it works every time
