Default Can an SMG gearbox be used in a Manual?

I don't mean convert a manual car to SMG, obviously!!

My gearbox is getting on a bit now, 195k miles and it makes a slight growl at around 1.5k to 2.5k revs in second and third. I'm thinking of replacing it but the only ones on ebay state SMG. I hear they are the same box, but would there need to be anything done before fitting it apart from changing the bell housing?

Also, would an SMG box have had a harder life, given the way they can 'thump' through the gears, so would I be better off waiting for an original manual box?

Thanks!

Yes, cheapest way is to use an expensive self centring lever rather than fit detects and machine bell housing.

Second isnuse a manual bell housing but thrusts may not Be set correctly

Yes you can use an SMG box.

Just swap the bell housing with the one from your manual.

The SMG box will be in better condition as the SMG doesn't miss shift, unlike humans.

Whats the rough cost for converting to manual? Cheaper than a fix for the SMG if it goes bang?

If you got to the right places to fix the SMG it's not most of the time. Of course if your pump itself (and not the motor) goes bang then a manual conversion can look more cost effective.

Back on topic.

As cossie1 said it will be a case of switching the bellhousings and removing the compression spring and retapping it to take a manual GPS sensor. The other way around this is to code the car to accept that there is no GPS present, as per the Z3Ms etc. This is what a few manualised SMG owners have done.

As said, another method is to get a self centralising shifter like an RTD, CAE or Samsonas shifter. This will circumvent the need to fit a manual bellhousing.

Thanks!
You assume all manual owners baby their gearboxes when cold and when they are ragging them. I know two of my friends don't, one of which owns a 17,000 mile M4 manual. Both are die-hard manual fans too. A third manual fan tries to flatshift on track! :muttley

Me and a mate in the M4
"Why don't you put it into 1st Chas?".
"it's reluctant to go in!"
"Push it harder, it will go in!"

Of course if an SMG is driven in S6 from cold then it's a different ballgame, but I doubt every (or many) owners do that. I can't speak for everyone but mine is in S4 in manual mode since I did the CSL rev-match, and S2/S3 in auto; S5 is firmer than it was prior to the rev-match update. Prior to that it would live in S5 in manual and S2 in auto.
