To remove the rasp is to remove Cindy Crawfords beauty spot.

It's one of the most defining features and you need to leave it well alone.

What exhaust mod/set up do you recommend to amplify the rasp without much drone?

Supersprint non-res centre pipe. Love the sound of my M even more now 👌🏻

Not a fan of the rasp. A 325i or 330i sounds nicer, a lot deeper than the tiny raspy sound the E46 M3 makes.

ive never heard any exhaust mod or aftermarket set up that sounds as good or as distinctive as that cazoo/farting into a coke can/something's rattling and broken sounding of an E46 M3.

Every car I've had which I've put a decat on (admittedly only 2) has gained top end but lost a bit of bottom end shove so overall I can't see it being worth the hassle.

Just my experience and obviously I've not tried an M3 with a decat on it.
I would say it's made a huge difference, hence saying it's up there with the AP's as my favourite mod despite the sound.

It revs out so much cleaner than before, I kept bashing the limiter for the first few miles as the last 2k zipped by so much more eagerly and it seems to light them up in places I'm sure it wasn't before

I have a pair of stainless toyosport decat pipes on my wife's e46m3 at the moment, unfortunately she hates the rasp and it's pretty loud to be honest.

75 if anybody wants them

When I was looking to buy an m3 the only thing I hated was the sound and I said that's the only thing I'll change when I buy one. After I bought one, I thought to myself, the sound is the only thing I wouldn't change, I love the sound, it's unique. You know when an m3 is going past.

I'm surprised there are so many that have voted against the rasp. Surely you all knew what the E46 M3 sounded like before you bought it?! It's such a distinctive, unique and head turning sound!
I can remember the first time I heard it as one screamed past me. I knew then I had to have one!

Revenent. Is the Supersprint centre pipe you mentioned the one that merges the twin pipes into
the single larger pipe then splits again before the back box?

Thats the one.

Swapping the cats for 100/200 cell race cats enhances the rasp, decat makes the rasp ridiculously loud.

Me too mate, its one of the best engine noises ever (apart from a F355)

Theres nothing better than going past someone with a can of wasps screaming out of the tailpipes.

So true.
Here's the 355 sound epic. https://youtu.be/JHcyVXq8GUw

I've got mine booked in to have the cat pipe refitted. Sounds terrible with the decat. I'm undecided if I'll stick with the supersprint resonated mid section I've got fitted or switch back to the no res supersprint pipe I have as well. Tempted to keep the resonated mid box and change the sport rear box for a race one. Thinking it'll be a good combo.

For me that Status Gruppe car on You Tube is still the nicest sounding M3 I've ever heard.

There's plenty to love about the E46 M3. Some people like the rasp, I don't. I don't want to sound like a 17 yo chav.

It is a fine line though, a Maserati Gran Turismo sounds good, the Jaguar F Type is bordering on chavvy.
An Alfa V6 sounds epic.

Just in case you've never tried it - drop both the back seats and take it for a run. The sound is transformed, I love driving it like that!

This is one advantage of having a touring, it sounds like that all the time.
