Default Diff leak

My diff has a small leak, it doesn't appear to be significant enough to drop on the driveway and hasn't been noted on MOTs.

A friend has told me this is common and not much needs to be done unless its enough to drip on the floor. My other concerns is reading stories about people getting diffs serviced, only to get them back in a worse state, grinding, clunking etc...

What are peoples views?

Where is it wet? Usually just a seal that needs replacing.

It’s quite common for the input seal to leak. Mine has been replaced in the past and I’m about to replace it now. The seal does not look very robust. Technically not difficult just a pain in the ar$e.

From what I understand if its the i/p seal it needs to be done by someone who knows
what there doing. Something about the pre-load on the bearings.

I’ve just booked my M3 in to have the input seal done. Noticed it leaking while doing a brake service at the weekend. Didn’t fancy tackling it myself as I have a wales trip planned end of the month. 3 hours labour plus the cost of the part. Will have the diff oil changed at the same time and the updates diff bolts fitted.

Pretty sure itís just the output seal, otherwise the diff is working fine.

Mark the nut and flange and count the number of turns when removing. Camera on tripod and film it to be sure. Do not use a new nut just a new locking ring. Fit the nut back in the same position. Fit new torx screws.
That's going to be how I tackle it in a couple of weeks. Could be interesting!

As above for the process for the input flange - centre pop mark on shaft and nut to align, then count the turns.

Be careful with the outputs, I incorrectly assumed there would be a stop on the casing for you to drive the seal into, nope, can knock it all the way in past the sealing surface if you like, so I did 3 output seals on my diff
