Hey Dali

Countless times I have looked at your Vanos rebuild whilst planning mine, next week now.

Just to let you know the S62 Diaphragm Springs are now available from BMW UK if you wanted to edit your post at all.

I bought mine from BMW back in March last year, so not exactly recent news. Well worth doing though.

My new grills arrived (chrome outer + black slats): - I took some pics of them and the Stoptechs below:

Stoptech ST40
I had the brake fluid flushed and replaced with Motul RBF600 as originally intended. Also the wheel weights have now been reapplied in such positions as to not interfere with the callipers - all is good! No complaints on the ST40 so far, they are excellent. The braking feel is different compared to the AP racing 6 pot, you tend to 'feel' a lot more of the braking action if that makes sense.... boy do they stop!

Here is a great vid demonstrating the power of upgraded brakes for those who are curious about such upgrades:

* Stopping power of Stoptech BBK on a Stage II+ mk6 GTI

That's all for now, thanks for reading

I didn't think you could get 18" wheels over the BBK's what's the clearance like?

It's dependes on the disc size mate. I run 6 pots on my track car with 330 discs behind 17" wheels.

Yep, the only clearance issue I encountered was with the calliper and wheel weights which has now been resolved. Also bear in mind I am running a 12mm spacer upfront so no issues along that plane.

Look classy Dali. Where did you get the front grills from or have you altered them yourself?

Well that was the plan first off, to keep the OEM chrome outers and buy some aftermarket black grills on ebay and just use the inner slats. All good except for the fact that the inner slats just wouldn't mount properly to the OEM chrome outers.

So plan B was to use the existing OEM chrome grill set, paint the inner slats black. All good but quite a few of the mounting tabs had crumbled due to age and so a new grill set would be required - hence I chucked on the gloss black grills in the meantime.

Some friends in the US pointed towards a set of BMW E46 grills that have chrome outers and black inner slats from factory... so I ordered those:

BMW Chrome Outer / Black Inner grills - Left & Right
51138208684
51138208683

You can find sets on ebay.

How you getting on with the Stoptechs now they've been on a while? They're on my list as a potential upgrade, are you happy with them?

No complaints at all. They are marvellous, the braking performance is excellent. It has been said that Stoptech tune the front and rear bias very well, I would like a set of rears for completeness at some point (used), but I don't feel I need them, the current setup is more than enough for me. Remember although I have an OEM setup on the rear I'm running PFZ pads too.

The 'street pads' that come with the ST40s are very good, hardly any dust compared to the filthy DS2500s.

Investing in a BBK is a hard decision given the cost. However the confidence it gives you makes it worth every penny on my opinion. Although I sold the APs, the braking performance they gave made it impossible for me to go back to the stock setup.

A few night pics taken on the iphone...

Thanks for that, that's good to hear.

It is tempting. My rears will need replacing soon and I'm wondering if now might be the time to just bite the bullet and do the lot.

Car looks superb, as usual.

edit: also really liking your headlamp upgrade too...

E-Box Fan Replacement

For some time I've seen the odd shadow code appear for the e-box fan. At first I wasn't even aware of what it was.

The e-box fan sits underneath the passenger side dash (RHD) and aids cooling the ECU box. More recently the shadow codes for the e-box kept appearing at frequent rates. Another key indicator of a faulty e-box fan will be a 'chirp' noise.

Knowing the e-box fan was on it's way out left me uncomfortable. The ECU box in the engine compartment is sealed off, hence why it requires a fan from the interior to aid cooling.

I've created a quick guide, you'll want to follow the links below the guide for more detailed instructions.

Once installed, put everything back together again as it was.

No more chirping or error codes

Part Numbers:

** Take note here, ETK is misleading! There are two fans, a standard 2 pin fan and a 3 pin fan. According to ETK (realoem) the 3 pin fan is for SMG cars, but on my car (smg) it was a 2 pin fan. I found out the hard way, hence I have a spare 3 pin fan on the shelf.

Only way to be sure is to check what fan you have.

12907570074 - 2 pin e-box fan
or
12907571019 - 3 pin e-box fan

G-Shock Aviator
Just for fun I'll share with your my latest gadget. I bought this Aviator not long ago. I've always had a thing for pilot watches. It's a beautiful piece loaded with tech; sapphire crystal glass, atomic clock sync, magnetic compass, solar charging to name a few. It's very light too.

I'll have some more updates soon.

Thanks for reading
