Car: 2002 M3 SMG
Colour Combo: Phoenix Yellow / Black
Default No EML or SMG light on start-up

Hi Guys,
Looking for a bit of advice...

I'm going to look at an E46 M3 SMG coupe this weekend, of which the seller has sent me numerous photos and videos, all of which look good, car looks clean, shows the car starting up and running smooth etc.

However, one thing I have noticed is that on startup, there appears to be no EML or SMG light illuminating on the dash.
Has anyone else seen this before? Is this a common thing, or an indication that something is wrong?

Appreciate any advice. Thanks.

RUN!

At best that sounds like an expensive can of worms. If they'll fix it, by all means proceed, but that's an MOT fail even if nothing underlying is broken.

I suspect foul play.

I feared this would be the response!
Car looks and sounds clean, but I just noticed that these lights weren't showing on the start-up sequence.

Do a cluster self test
If they don't work flag the fault up

EML looks to be on ("EML" in the LH lower window)

...I'd have to go check mine to see if the cog light comes on.

I'd challenge the seller head on about it.

My E36 S50SB30 had both the ABS and Brake Pad warning bulbs removed from the dash. I kind of knew there would be trouble and didn't overpay for the car, but you'll be expecting to pay a lot more for this if you buy it and those ain't faults you need to be chasing down or rectifying yourself!

Failing that, you just say they aren't working so there must be a fault and to err on the side of caution you're knocking £2,500 of what you'd be prepared to pay for the car - unless he fixes it first.

Thanks all. Seller is going to have it checked out tomorrow at a specialist.

You never know, it could be something as simple as a previous owner taping over the bulbs due to a previous fault showing up.
Or it could be something major and theyíve hidden a current fault.

Either way, Iíve asked for proof of what they find tomorrow, then I can assess from there.

Youíre right, EML looks to be on, but the check engine light next to it isnít. Got my wires crossed. SMG cog definitely isnít on.

They'll laugh you off the bank and wait for the next person that's less well informed in all probability

Thanks again all.
To follow on from earlier;
Seller has offered to take the car to TI Motorsport to have it checked out.
He contacted them and they reiterated that at least the SMG light should show during startup and then go off.
I have no reason not to trust the seller, I'm quite trustworthy in what people say, so I won't judge anything until the proof is in front of me. Fingers crossed.

Yes, but at least our friend here keeps his money and gets to spend it on a better car. Plenty of fish in the sea and all that.........

Sounds like the seller is doing the right thing though, so let's hope he gets this car, and sorted at someone else's cost.

Last thing I want is to buy an example that I end up regretting.
I've wanted an E46 for longer than I can remember, so I'm taking my time.

Latest;
Seller took it to someone last night to have the diagnostics read and perform a gauge test.

Gauge test shows the lights out still, so they must have been doctored to not light up.

Diagnostic shows an Exhaust Temperature Sensor code currently showing, which I would assume is caused by the de-cat's fitted to the car?
Is that correct?
