Default Andy's Space Grey E92 M3

I thought I'd take a few moments to start my progress documentation / journey with my E92.

I've had it about 6 weeks now I think. I've a long term v8 e36 project car in the garage and in the past I've dabbled with an e36 touring that I modified quite heavily and also an E24 that I carried out a small restoration on so I'm not new to BMW.

I was driving a mk2 Audi TT but I needed something with more space for the imminent arrival of my first rugrat so with man logic I saw an e92 M3 as a perfect practical next car so I went on the search daily, here, Autotrader, Ebay and Pistonheads

The requirement was:
Not black
DCT
EDC
below 80k mileage
below 20k cash money

Initially I was hunting for a Melbourne red car as all my other BM's have been red but all were either manual, grey leather or high mileage.

So that leads me onto this find, the specification is as follows:

DCT
EDC
2.5 pipe mod by PCW
Gloss black kidney grills
Gloss black indicator vents
Gloss black bonnet vents
Black Novillo leather interior
Professional sat nav
Auto head lights
Xenons
Comfort entry and start
Aux music socket
Bluetooth
Voice control
Heated memory seats
Parking distance sensors front & rear
Auto rain sensor
Storage pack

The throttle actuators have been replaced as detailed within a couple of Lee's threads but alas there is no paperwork to back this up. The black kidneys and side grilles along with the 2.5 mod were a bonus as they were things I was going to do to any M3 I eventually bought.

Pictures from Lee's for sale advert....

I've been meaning to take some better overall shots of how she sits at the moment but I never seem to get the time. Anyway, for me the best way to get to know a car is spend some time cleaning and getting it ship shape so.....

The rear lights came out of the body & bootlid, washed, waxed and refitted

A new rear 78mm badge for the bootlid from Cotswold

As mentioned the privacy glass tint wasn't factory and in my opinion not particularly well done so that got stripped off! What an absolute ball ache of a job removing the glue!!!

I'm doing a fair few hundred miles a week at the moment, one of the first motorway / a road / town journeys where I thought I'd take it easy I returned this mpg!..... I've subsequently got 31.0 mpg over a 90 mile journey. I know the cars comp is generally inaccurate but its always nice to see this pretend economy LOL

Fitted my personal plates and decided I didn't like the M badge or the lip spoiler. I'm not a fan of the carbon duck bill spoiler most people fit either if I'm honest, spoiler & badge-less all the way!

I took the wheels off to give them a proper clean and seal, they're not in bad condition generally, gave them a little touch up in a couple places.... depending if the car stays I'll be on the hunt for some new wheels.... definitely not 359's or anything resembling them LOL

Getting into all the places most non-enthusiasts don't clean.....

A bit of bead-age

One of my cats making himself comfy!!!

I do a lot of motorway driving from the south up to Birmingham so I sit with the cruise on at 76. I've seen 31 mpg on the same journey where I did sit at ALL the nation speed limits

On the flip side though I've blown through 20 quids worth of super in 40 miles

A few little bits to update, unfortunately nothing ground breaking but still progress and tweaks to the old girl!

First up is a little refreshing to the rear cup holders that have seen better days... refurb'd top obviously

Next was cleaning some suspect stains from the boot

I'm still not bored of that feeling I get when I come back to the car

An unexpected extra this month was a new front tyre.... the fronts are only 3 months old annoyingly! ****ing Michelin man smiling at me right next to the split haha

Might be a bit of a marmite mod but I really couldn't give a toss LOL I've a few other bits and pieces I'm working on

All red rears.....

Last week I arranged with EndTuning (http://www.endtuning.com/) to drop past his place as I was staying up in Birmingham to get the GTS DCT transmission software upgrade and to carry out the 241e engine software update.

The upgrade to the GTS software has made a massive improvement to the transmission, its been covered to death online but safe to say I'm very happy. The update to 241e has also been a decent benefit. My usual trudge up and down the M1 I've noticed slightly better fuel economy and also much better throttle response too.....maybe a placebo though LOL

He also carried out a bit of coding which saved me buying Carly, I had done:

Folding mirrors on locking
1/8 tank fuel warning light
Seat belt bongs turned off
Alarm chirps activated
Instant mpg

Love the progress, back looks really good with the all reds and no spoiler (the standard one I like but I'm with you on not liking the optional one at all).

A little bit of a boring update but its all progress!

Some time ago I removed the steering wheel trim as the rubberised finish has started to peel, just as a quick tidy up (and to tide me over before I maybe go the carbon route) I picked up a can of matte lacquer, removed the rubber coating and sprayed the trim up. Looks much nicer and has (obviously) retained the matte finish pretty much as OE and matches the rear cup holders I'd also refurbished before.

Another tiny job that I got quite obsessional about sorting was repopulating the tool tray. I was missing the 8 / 10mm spanner so picked up one of those from ebay but then that left the ugly space where the sunroof crack goes for cars with sunroofs..... regardless of the fact I don't have a sunshine roof I picked up the cranked allen key too LOL.... I can sleep easy now.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand finally for the minute, after all the talk of Pears soap for cleaning the leather I picked up a bar from Superdrug and set about giving them a wash and brush up. Unfortunately the before and afters aren't that noticeable in the photos but in person its made a HUGE differences! Lovely and matte and looks like new (almost)

Before left, after right

In other news I've fitted some LCI rear lights from CarParts4Less, managed to grab a set while they were in stock and also just had a lovely delivery from Jack at Royal Steering wheels!!! but photos and a full update will wait for another time

Your car, your rules (but carbon high-kick and 359s for the win LOL).

I preferred it with the lip and badge being honest, but fair play for styling it in your own vision!

Your efforts on the car so far are outstanding (seat, rear cup holder and boot carpet cleaning), some really good care and attention bringing it up to scratch. Good man.

And chuffed that you got some LCI rears on the ECP/carparts4less 300 deals when they have them. Cracks me up seeing people trying to peddle old used sets for 400+, insisting they are different from the ULO brand ones... They're not. They are made by the same parent company and Ive compared them next to each other - material quality is identical! They will smarten the rear up no end.

Keep it up and enjoy

So a couple weeks ago I had a delivery from Royal Steering wheels, I asked for the following work to be done...

Nappa smooth leather all round, flat bottomed, profiled hand grips, red strip at 12 o'clock (which will tie in better with the scheme of the interior in due course....) and black stitching. Turnaround on the wheel was excellent at 2 weeks from order and I couldn't be happier with the result

Anyway, onto the the pictures

Box fresh....

I'm loving a little 50/50 comparison collage showing the not so pretty shiny standard boring wheel

And a final photo in all its glory

Gave the girl a bath today and took a couple photos with the car now sporting some LCI rear clusters.

I used some red tint to remove the white reverse portion of the lights which I think looks miles better this way and very subtle
