Bit busy on other parts of my m3 project but as soon as I've got time I'll open up the spare hydraulic unit and everything will get a lot clearer. I'll post pictures then

Smallish update; I've found the topic again. If you drive an SMG car you NEED this cable. Accept NO OTHER cable. Also, you NEED a computer/laptop with hardware COM/RS232 port. USB adapters DO NOT work. PCMCIA adapters I'm not sure about. The adress should be '1' hence why USB adapters don't work.

BUY IT!!!

Or through Gert's site (Rv8flyboy on bimmerforums) http://www.interfaces4beemers.net/buy.html

so what i understand is that you have fooled the computer to think that the USB to RS232 adapter is the hardware 1 adress?

some functions on the e36 need ads to communicate others like dme and smg ecu don't,before i bought gerts cable i had an ebay special with the 20 pin adapter,i used it to bleed the smg system which it did fine,i still use it today for live data logging. no fooling of the laptop was needed,i just installed the cable driver and plugged it in to the usb port.

that is quite strange though.. there are many reports of non hardware COM port setups not being able to communicate to the SMG computer (and some others). Including mine!!

Guess there are even more variables then.

Anyways if someone wants to play safe... do the hardware COM port setup with Gert's cable, and if you feel lucky go the "ebay setup, with possibly USB adapter" route.

Really can't believe I have never seen this vid before as it's posted on YT in 2010.

Maybe it's because of the fully written SMG text and no "SMG".

Too bad it's so short, but this looks like a BMW test setup/show setup of the E36 SMG box.
