Sounds like another type of bodge job.

When the selector is moved to the S gate, it closes a microswitch that tells the SMG brain S mode is selected.

Sounds like that switch is broken/disconnected/wiring of it messed up.

And yes, check with INPA as suggested.

How do you add paddle shifters to a E36 SMG ?

Could you be more specific? Otherwise I’d say, drill a hole and screw them on.

The shifter is a glorified switch. You can take any switch, fit it anywhere on the car and have it shift gears.
