Does that mean the E90 manual uses the same gearbox as the E46 ?

No it uses a higher torque rated box. (Still Getrag though)

Believe me, when you try the DCT you will be amazed.

If you refer to RealOEM.com you will see that neither E46 nor E92/3 models of M3 list a Manual/Automatic section it is all Manual.

Here is the car I'm going to see today

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...#ht_3162wt_911

Apparently it has some abnormal wear on the drivers bolster given the mileage , I have a copy email from BMW sent to him last week where they have agreed to change the drivers seat cover , so can book that into the dealer in Cardiff to sort that out

That is a valid point, and I can understand why they do that.

From an engineering / parts perspective we all know that they are not Automatic gearboxes with torque convertors etc so it makes sense to list them as manuals. It is far more logical when looking for parts and checking diagrams.

Page 55 of the Owner's handbook.

The sequential M gearbox with Drivelogic is an automated manual gearbox on which operation of the clutch and gear changing are performed by an electro hydraulic system.

Page 16 of the Supplementary Owner's handbook.

The SMG II sequential M gearbox is an automated manual gearbox on which operation of the clutch and gear changing are performed by an electro hydraulic system.

Sorry, I don't understand what your point is mate?

We all know it's an automated manual box. Nobody has ever said otherwise as we all know the gearbox is the same as manual but with actuators.
The important point is "on which operation of the clutch and gear changing are performed by an electro hydraulic system"

The driver doesn't have a clutch pedal. Therefore in the eyes of the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations 1999 it is classed as an Automatic.
No 'ifs' or 'buts', it's a fact.

Otherwise someone driving one using an Automatic licence could be prosecuted.

Edit: Just for anyone who's interested: http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1999/uksi_19992864_en.pdf

Just admit to the fact it's classed as a manual and be done with it. Your wrong I'm right!!

This is really not helping the OP is it?

I would agree with you Rab that yes it is a Manual.

Now for the OP i am assuming that in the eyes of BMW there is no distinction between Manual and Auto. I'm certain the dealer could confirm that for you though.

Good luck with the car.
